Hi, I have been offered the post of temp clerical officer in revenue commissioners in cork for 10 weeks this summer. does anyone have any experience of accepting one of these roles, if you did well and your boss was happy would you have a good chance of being offered another contract or possibly a permenant position? any advice is much appreciated.

Yeah, 3 times I did temping roles over the years and was offered a permanent postition. You have a good chance especially with a Govt post.:)

No not altogher, 1st time was years ago when I was a spring chick, I went in temping for 2 wks and was there for 8 years. 2nd time was about 6 yrs ago and again a 2 wk temp role, within 3 mths I was manager of the dept, 3rd time was only last year when I did a 6 mth temp contract, they wanted me to stay but only had a position in another dept., said I would give it a go for 3 mths as it was a new role but I didn't like it, too boring so I left after the 3 mths. If you are good and they like you they will keep you:)

No it ain't, it was a temp job I was doing whilst looking for work. After two weeks I was then offered a permanent position. The manager went on sick leave shortly after and I was ask to take on her workload, she was out sick for about 6 wks and then decided not to come back as she was pregnant. As I was already doing her job and they were happy enough with the work they offered me the position. Whats BS about that?

seems odd they would give a head of dept. job to someone relatively new, but then again who am I to doubt you

It wasn't a huge big dept, just 3 staff. I had the experience to do the job, I was already doing it during the Manager's absence and they were satisfied with the work, whats so wrong with that. The opportunity arose and I took it. Believe me I was just as surprised myself when they offered to me.

Strange that you didn't have to go through the Commission. What grade was it ? Was their some sort of competition for it ?

You will have to apply for the permenant positions through Publicjobs.ie, they won't make u permenant from your temp contract unfortunately
