Oh... I thought it had widened since the last time a thread had been posted about this to include random owl checks.

A budgie? Right, how the hell would you get a budgie into the prison and how could you keep it in the prison without the officers noticing?

The IPS also says that new walk-through metal detectors and an X-ray scanner are being installed in Portlaoise prison and will be operational this week.

These security systems will be installed in all the country's closed prisons in the next few months.

I am surprised that this isn't standard already.

I don't think a prisoner keeping a budgie is something I would be terribly concerned about. If it was a carrier pigeon then I might be a bit more concerned. That would also explain the ecstacy and syringes........

This morning's reports say the budgie is believed to have been smuggled into the prison by a female visitor who concealed the bird internally in her body

Wonder when its christmas how big a turkey she can get in, live one that is!

But far more importantly, why would you want to?

To keep you occupied? I'm sure prison is fairly boring, looking after a pet would make it slightly less boring.......

It's either that or take up heroin! lol

Did he say if any of the cells had been decorated by Martha? Certainly that would have raised their ranking above 3 star?

and how could you keep it in the prison without the officers noticing?

What makes you think the "officers" don't notice?

where do you think they get half the stuff from?

    And nitbell wins the prize.

Prison officers can do this for a number of reasons:
    1. They're corrupt. Happens.
    2. They want to maintain calm in the prison - let 'em have phones and you don't have to worry about a riot, or similar. You might just... That's why the minister was saying specifically that he's not giving tacit permission for them to turn a blind eye to this sort of thing.

If you're in prison then there should be no tolerance for committing further crime. So, for example, you riot because you're not allowed to break rules and have drugs, or mobile phones (etc), then I send in a squad of riot police with masks on (don't want to be identified, remember that's a big problem for prison officers) and smash heads off of toilet bowls. Still doesn't work totally, just look at the hardcore prisons they have in the USA, but I'd rather not see people already convicted of crimes get away with more on the inside.

usually in most countrys the head that rolls belongs to the minister, but in our bananna republic, wellllllll

A friend of mine's brother is in Limerick Prison (her brothers a bit of a dangerous nutter tbh) and he was sold a mobile phone by the prison guards. Can't remember how much he paid but the prices read like a shopping list - sim card E100, old phone E250 and new phone E450 or something of that order.

These guards are already on seriously high money so they should all be given the sack and prison time if it can be proven...

Your a sack, as usually the prison officer on high money comes out.

Simple fact, if there was overtime in your job and you workd you earn.......extra money, well done.
So when a prison officer works massive amounts of over time he/she just gets
    "paid seriously high money".

Secondly would anyone one here like to go in a **** hole everyday and watch the scum off Ireland???? Have them spit on you and abuse and in some cases threaten to kill you and your family.

Which brings me to the next way prisoners can get this stuff in and keep it.
Say for instance a prisoner comes to you and tells you that you lovely little daughter Sarah gets outta of your local school at 3 and if you dont get him something she ll disappear????? What would you do?

John Gilligan threatened two prisoner officer with such conviction that one has now left the country and the other has made his house into a fortress in fear all because they would not open the tuck shop especially for him on a Sunday.

The prisons are the way they are because the governement dictates that a prison has this right and that right and protects them more than the men and women who keep them from the public.

Instead they should get a bed a toilet and thats it.

I was told that the going rate in portlaoise from the prison gaurds for a mobile phone is €500. From a person I know that knows somone inside.

It was claimed that this prison was was supossed to be one of the most secure prisons in europe..

If this is true it is a major scandle
