Self Install Sky HD

I have bought a second hand sky hd box on ebay, bit of a impulse but I was going to get one eventually. Now I've found that to upgrade to sky hd from my original bare bones sky, I need to change the lnb at my satellite to a quad lnb and run two cables from that to my box.

Can anyone shed some light on this, do I just need a new lnb/ new lnb and cables and connectors.

I've been check around but most how to guides presume you'll be upgrading from sky plus.

Is installing a lnb something I can do easily myself or something I need a TV engineer to do for me.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes you can do this yourself, you need a quad lnb for sky minidish some good quality cable with 2 f connectors. You can het HD reception with just one cable but you will be unable to record one program while watching another without both feeds from the lnb. You could also use your existing box in another room if you wished

    Pleasure
Make sure to get ct100 or good quality rg6 for very short runs

I'd recommend satellite.ie for cable and the lnb, you can actually function without it (as I have for a while now) but it is really frustrating, you have to be watching the channel you want to record which defeats the purpose!

Hmmm you guys got me thinking...

Is there a maximum cable length for sky hd from the dish ??

I am going to order this soon.... However I have a strange house design... and live in an are where the placement of dishes is ... err sensitive...

So basically i have to install the dish on the top floor of the house at the front on the floor which has a large balcony (lots of neighbours have done same)... then the cable needs to go back up over the house, down to the ground floor at back where the living room is...

I would like the option of multi-room in future and certainly want the option in the main room of watching one channel while recording another....

So .. what you reckon i need to order from sky to get this installed /??

And is there an issue with having such a large cable run.. I know neighbours have the same setup but dont think any have HD

That length of cable run shouldn't be a problem. I just hope you'll not be literally throwing the cable over teh roof to the other side?

Make sure that CT100 cable or equivalent is used, as RG6 won't cut it over that distance IMO.

It'll be OK for SkyHD, same as for ordinary Sky.
