Heading to Vilamoura for 2 weeks at end of month with a 2 year old. Anyone know of nice beaches off the beaten resort track anywhere in the region, maybe west coast within an hour or two drive?

Also, anywhere else worth driving to????

I was in Lagos last year and I really liked it there. It is not as touristy as other places in the Algarve like Albuferia and it has a lovely beach, plenty of water spots and amazing coastal cave tours.

Another place that was very nice off the beaten track was Sagres. There are some lovely beaches there and they have a museum that was once a school to the famous explorer, Vasco de Gama.

Villamoura is the place with the marina yah? There's a nice beach near the marina actually so you won't have to drive for hours!

Make sure you go to the restaurant Casa do Campo (I think that's how you spell it) - it's in Almancil which isn't too far from Villamoura - one of the best restaurants in Portugal. Getting hungry thinking about it! :D
