How do I refresh shares without restarting Samba?

Probably a daft question but I've put some new shares into my smb.conf file (Fedora). I know I can get the shares seen by typing /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb restart but does this not cancel any file server operations that might be happening?
This is only a home server so it's not that busy but there I'd like to know the proper way to do it without knocking off users. Anybody out there know how to do it?
