    Hi there,

Loads of shops sell the phone cards you are talking about, pick one up and call home cheaply.

    Try www.zaptel.com

I use them. As the other poster said all the gift and souvenir shops will sell phone cards that have freephone access (be careful, hotels often charge to call freephone numbers as do phone boxes) and a PIN number. Usually it's around 4c or 5c per minute depending on surcharges etc.

They are pretty easy to get in the US, and work out to be very good value, but make sure that you ask in the store for the best value card for Ireland, they are pretty used to hearing this, there are hundreds of different types of these call cards, and some are better value for certain countries. Also, it's much better value if you can call you other half on a landline, as calling mobiles eats up the minutes.

the phone card I've used is a Jupiter card. You can get them at www.comfi.com. It is very good value for calling Irish mobiles from the USA (approx 15 cent/min). If you are calling Irish landlines then it is alot cheaper (2-3 cent per minute with the Champion card). Note that the cards with the cheapest per minute rates usually have some form of weekly standing charge of 50-90 cent.

why not just use skype? Its free computer to computer and its less than 2c per minute to call an irish landline.

Is it just me or has skype's quality of service gone seriously downhill in the last few months? I've been using it for awhile now but for the last few times have had lots of moments where either party would lose the signal. Totally unusable at times...
