    Hand 1

Villain 1 is pretty bad regular. I'd imagine a small winner in the game. 30/10/5.7 over 300 hands. My image is baddish.

I open AdTd UTg to 8. Loose fish calls UTG+1. Villain in SB calls.

    Flop (25)

    Ts 9d 3d

I bet 18. UTG+1 calls. SB shoves for 200. Call or fold?

    Hand 2

    1 90/0/2.2 guy limps in CO. I make it 10 OTB with Ac5c. SB calls. He's 25/10/1.6 over 80.

    Flop (30)

    As 2c 6h

Checked to me I bet 20. SB calls.

    Turn (70)

    Qs

    Check. Check.

    River (70)

    5s

He leads for 50. Call, fold or raise?

    Hand 3

UTG makes it 8. Standard TAG 25/15ish. I make it 28 with TT. This is the 3rd or 4th time this session i've 3bet him and he hasnt played back yet. He makes it 80, leaving 120 behind. Im pretty sure he's pissed off with my 3bets and my general table aggression. Call, fold or shove?

#1 snap call - his agggro factor is really high so there are tons of draws in his hand range, and we have them all totally crushed
#2 i'd call, although its close to a fold

1: probably fold, although it would depend on how bad your image was. I can't see you ever being a huge favourite her though. (i.e. K10, Q10, J10 etc.) I also would just fold A10 UTG if my image was this bad
    2: Call everytime.

    Hand 1. Instacall.
    Hand 2: Instacall
    Hand 3: Instapuke.

Given the history I don't like the preflop reraise. I fold to the 3 bet anyway.

1010 isnt a great hand to be 3 betting in general terms, espec vs an UTG opener and when you will have position for the rest of the hand [im assuming your in position] even from the blinds the best way to play this is to call and play reasonably passively postflop, imo

    as played you should fold

Has the villian from hand three flat called any of your re-raises, or has he folded the other three or four times?

He's folded every other time but i was feeling he was getting sick of it.

    why?

because we'd been involved in lots of pots, id already stacked him and I was playing super aggro so i was half expecting him to play back at me.

    1. insta call
    2. I prefer a call rather than a raise here.
    3. You say hes not played back at you yet so id prefer a call here. Hes not three betting you with any hands less than TT.

if he flat calls the third hand then there's 160 in the pot with only 120 behind. pushing or folding is much better.

    Results:

    1. I obviously called and rivered a flush against top two
    2. He had 22
    3. I folded and he showed KJo.

hand one-i'd call...he's really agressive and he's not a good player,he could have a worse flush draw,a straight draw or even a worse ten some of the time, and if he has two pair or a set you've got outs.

hand two i might actually minraise here, something i rarely do,but his line looks an awful lot like AJ/AT to me.

hand 3,sometimes i just get that feeling from the way things have been going that i'm not in bad shape, but my standard play here would be to fold.if he calls you're pretty much dead, and five betting all in as a bluff is the sort of play you need to be pretty sure about.

lol, hadn't read the results when i replied.
valor i'm amazed to see you think hand two is close to a fold, what makes you think he's so strong? i see this line a lot with AJ/T,i'd consider minraising here for value!

    1) tink its a call
    2) never folding , just call
    3) hhhmmm - tough fold

I was going to put minraise as one of the options in the OP. I almost did it!

hes really passive and thats about all we beat. imo those hands often wont even value bet the river here, especially given OP's image as baddish and they will instead try to pick off a bluff

Pretty interested on this point. Can you expand a bit more? How about JJ/QQ? What about when you have 99/TT in the blinds? What about when it's a LP opener (CO or OTB)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭valor

basically medium pocket pairs are the worst hands to 3 bet with because you will almost always have a decent but not lock hand postflop, ie you 3 bet with 99 and the flop comes J75 so our hand has some strength but its gonna be really difficult to gauge how much. what do we do on turn, when raised etc etc
another factor is you pretty much kill your odds for hitting a set

the situation gets better as the pairs get higher because you will face **** situations less. my basic rule is to always call 99, and sometimes 3 bet 1010 and JJ, and always 3 bet QQ unless the opener is a nit.

the situation doesnt really change in the blinds imo - button opens and he is 24/17/3.5 and I have 99 I Will call and check call down most of the time on non terrible boards, and obviously put money in if i hit a set or w/e.
hands like this oop are difficult to play but I think they are easier/more profitable to play than playing the same 3 bet pot out of position against the samae player

one argument against this strategy is that so often we will fold the best hand postflop, ie that guy raises and the Flop comes AK2, and we have to check fold despite the fact that we still often have the best hand. imo this isnt the worst thing in teh world, its just something you have to deal with and move on, because no matter how we play it its gonna be an unprofitable situation

one major benefit is that alot of the regulars think it is the law that you have to re raise at least 1010+ so when I call JJ in the BB and cr on 224 I get absolutely no respect and I get called down by 88 or whatever, so you can win huge pots by deception, where as If I 3 bet he might call one barrel but will prob fold pf and I'm very unlikely to stack him

also, when we cold call in position and have an overpair vs a very aggressive player we can often pick off 3 barrles which is obviously great
