    Hi there,

I am looking for a good sniffing tool, which would be able to auto discover Wireless points and clients.
I tried a lot such as Stumbler today but I got a "No APs active" and the soft does not seem to be compatible with my Wireless card, a Intel 3945ABG.

    Thanks a lot in advance

I think you're a bit restricted in windows but kismet is good in linux.

Hope that you are asking us for a wi fi locator and not a packet sniffer! Packet sniffers are snoops (deserving of words that I cannot mention in this thread for fear of getting banned).

Or are you planning on wardriving? (Bad B!ue blushes and hides under table and says no more about this topic!)

In addition to those programmes that may be recommended on this thread, there are several companies that have preprogrammed handheld wi fi locators, along with strength of signal indicators. I think Targus has one. There are also key chain wi fi locators, but they are not very sophisticated. You might consider accessing PC World magazine online for a free review of these devices, as well as a review and sourcing of wi fi locator programme installations for your PC?

If you are planning on snooping on others' wi fi communications, be warned that I know of people who will put Pandora's boxes embedded in their private communications between parties, and if you open one, well, you might want to use your harddrive for a weight on your next fishing trip?

I am asking for an access point locator and packet sniffer yes.

The purpose is not to hack the IFSC tenants or my neighbors wireless networks but I want to get my hands dirty on WIFI stuffs.
I am working on security, but I have to admit I am really poor on WIFI technologies.

So I got myself a nice Linksys router using 802.11n technology, which is incredibility good (Very high range, excellent speed), I set up different crypto levels so I want to learn more now.
In the mean time I am also setting up a radius server to set up a WPA Enterprise access to see how good is it (Or bad).

So any good tool (Software, no 3rd party hardware) suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks guys

If your cards supported by linux

    Wifi tools:
Get Kismit running (shows non broadcasting SSID accesspoints)
see: http://www.wififorum.pl/ftopic13308.html for conf with your card

Has support for GPS devices two for war driveling

    Sniffers/misc:
Eathernet sniffers will work happily on wireless interfaces under linux and as the networks not switched arp spoofing isnt really necessary.

    wireshark (the dogs....)
    Etherape
    Driftenet always fun
    ettercap (alwys good)
    many more...

    Other:
aricrack-ng (legal on your own ap)

Learning more is just a google theres tons and tons of docs on this.

Freeradius is worth a look but make sure you get the most recent stable version

If you can boot off a USB stick you might try something like

    Pentoo

It is a live cd designed for Pen Testers, and may have some of the tools you need.

I am only starting to try it so I am not sure how easy / hard the tools will be to use, but it was recommended in work so I guess it is OK.

You will need a Proxim Wi Fi Card , or card with ATHEROS chipset if using Pentoo.

Picture this... A box full of worms, and other nasties, some of which not only eat your software, but also your HD. After that, you won't be able to get it up... (your PC that is... Ha!).
