Setanta Sports reveals new Premier League line-up

Setanta Sports today (Friday May 4th) revealed its Premiership line-up. Top analyst Steve McManaman and Angus Scott will join Paul Dempsey in the Setanta Sports team that will bring football fans live and exclusive coverage of 79 Barclays Premiership games next season. These games will not appear on Sky Sports or RTE.

Paul Dempsey will remain at the helm of the Saturday 3pm games, while Angus Scott is moving from ITV Sports to take the reins as presenter of Setanta Sports' coverage of the Premier League at 5.15 on Saturdays and 8pm on Mondays.

Beginning this August, subscribers to the Setanta Sports Pack will be treated to 79 exclusive live Premier League games. The newly acquired games will not be on Setanta Ireland but will be broadcast on Setanta Sports 1.

Niall Cogley, CEO of Setanta Ireland said: "These are major signings for Setanta Sports. Angus Scott brings a wealth of experience and a passion for the game that makes him the perfect anchor. Steve McManaman is a big name who has enjoyed a glittering career at the very top level. His insight and opinions will strike a great chord with Irish football fans."

Paul Dempsey joined Setanta Sports from Sky last year and has presented Setanta's coverage of Premier League, Champions League and UEFA Cup over the course of this season.

Angus Scott was previously a presenter for ITV Sport, covering a wide variety of sports for the network including football, rugby and motorsport.

Legendary former Liverpool, Real Madrid and England midfielder Steve McManaman is the most successful English player to have played the game overseas, winning the Champions League twice in its current format and La Liga twice with Real Madrid. He also enjoyed a glittering career at Liverpool, where he made 274 appearances, scored 46 goals and won the FA Cup (1992) and League Cup (1995).

So setanta ireland will only be showing the games that rte were showing.

Only Setanta Ireland can show the Saturday 3pm games. These games cannot be broadcast live in the UK. This is due to a law in place.

The other games will be available to Setanata subscribers in both Ireland and UK. Setanta 1 is the channel and for anyone in the UK who may read this on Freeview also.

Nope, they will only be showing 12 Games next season on Setanta Ireland. This is actually 3 less than they have had over the past 2 seasons.
The current deal which expired last Saturday, was for 30 games Live at 3pm on Saturdays. 15 each for Setanta and RTE.

Nice to see Sky no longer have the Monopoly over Premiership broadcasting rights. I for one look forward to having more of a choice to what games are on.

Has RTE2 also lost broadcasting rites? Wouldn't be a shame if they did as in my opinion they are way too biased towards Manchester Utd, no offense intended to man united fan's...

    Looking forward to August

While I can see the logic, I'm not best pleased as I'll now have to pay much more per season to have access to all televised games. Up till now it was just Sky Sports and a Prem Plus season ticket. Now it's Sky Sports and Setanta subs.

Agreed, and there won't be much difference with choice either - they will still cater mainly to the top sides, which is natural as that's where the biggest viewing figures will come, but I was happy to hear the announcements on Sky that PPV games are gone next season - but it'll cost me a lot more to subscribe to Setanta as well as Sky that Sky+Prem Plus...........and I'm sure the Sky subs will increase without the PPV........

also Steve McManaman's insight - sorry that's gonna be another reason to change channels - there's enough crap pundits already on TV. it's something that Setanta really lack and with the money that seems to be behind them at the moment you'd think they'd improve that area........

Unlike Setanta who are biased towards Liverpool and Chelsea?

Anyone any idea on the price of the sub to Setanta for next season? Has anyone contacted them?
    Thanks

Ya i'm interested in pricing too... We have it at the moment, signed up last september or october, but tbh we (well i) have it more for the rugby and NASN than anything else... If memory serves, it was €180 for year (€15 a month...) its gone up from that already (to €18 a month - 16 per annum) it would be a bit saucy if they put it up more again...

After looking at the link above, I'm surprised to see that Setanta Sports Ireland is available to Sky subscribers in UK (it's listed as part of the UK package anyway). I'd presume they block the channel during 3pm matches that they televise.

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

Yeah the 3pm footy is blocked over there, just like the coverage of the GAA is over here. TnaG had the rights to the league matches in both the Hurling and the football as had Setanta, but during these matches Setanta 1 was blank here in Republic.

Just to add to this, only 12 Saturday 3pm games will be broadcast on Setanta Ireland. The other 67 matches will all be on Setanta 1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭Andrew 83

Is that serious about 72 of the 79 featuring those 4 teams?!

Yes its true about the 4 teams.

Just on this. If you are not a subscriber of Setanta, these matches will be blocked from you.

So if you have Sky Digital with just Setanta 1 , you will not be ably to view these matches .

How is it possible to have Sky Digital with just Setanta 1. As far as I knew on Sky, its either the whole setanta pack or nothing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭Jungle Boy

I understood that UK rights were 6 packages with 23 matches each. Sky Sports won 4 packages (92 matches) whilst Setanta UK won the other 2 packages (46 matches). So I am confused how 67 matches will be shown on Setanta 1

    12 matches : Setanta Ireland (Saturday 3pm)
    46 matches : Setanta 1 (Saturday 5:15pm, Monday 8pm)
    21 matches : ??
    79 matches

If you have Setanta 1, they you must have all the Setanata Channels.

im nearly sure its 33 games on setanta ireland at 3pm saturdays!!last season setanta and RTE had 15 games each so thats 30!!Setanta must have being given 3 extra

It would make no sense having the games broadcasted on setanta sports 1 as its not available to the UK viewers..correct me if im wrong

    33 matches : Setanta Ireland (Saturday 3pm)
    46 matches : Setanta 1 (Saturday 5:15pm, Monday 8pm)
    =79 matches...

Still not sure how they get away with showing 72 out of 79 involving the top 4 teams....especially the games on setanta 1 as they have to spread the revenue amongst the 20 clubs especially until xmas!!

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,072 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

I can assure you it is only going to be 12 games on Setanta Ireland. Its been advertised on screen for the past couple of weeks. This has also been confirmed by some guy from Setanta in an interview broadcast on Off the Ball on Newstalk a few weeks back.

Oh and Setanta Sports 1 is available in the UK along with Setanta 2 and Setanta Ireland. Those 3pm games on Setanta Ireland will be blocked over in the UK.

They only have to block it to UK viewers. I don't see what point you are making. Setanta Ireland is also available all over the UK, but certain programmes are blocked. It works the other way too, certain programming on Setanta Sports 1 and 2 is blocked in Ireland, namely the GAA.

I just rang Setanta to see how much it would cost to pay for the 12 months up up front. I presumed there'd be some kind of discount but it's €223. Slightly more than €18 a month which is odd.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,361 ✭✭✭jaggiebunnet

can i just check then if this is a correct summary of the options

you don't need sky sports (currently ?? a month) to get setanta (currently 18euro a month) and if you were to drop sky sports come 1st july you are still covered for sky+ being free as this is going to be dropped as a charge?

setanta offer footie english and scottish where as sky only have the premiership, on the downside setanta have muppet commentators, poor quality picture(from what i remember) where as sky have all the interactive stuff and some decent commentators plus the football first on a saturday night + champs league + internationals.

    Tough one to call really...

From what I can glean, Setanta will only show the equivalent of Prem Plus matches which cost an additional €70 last season on Sky, the Saturday noon and Sunday lunchtime kick offs. Now it will cost an additional €223 to watch these games? I think I will just stick with Sky and take whatever they have to offer. The only thing I find odd is that Setanta are pushing their rates without mentioning Premiership soccer. Previously on Sky they would be banging on about a Prem Plus season ticket at this stage of the proceedings, rising by a tenner a moth until August. I would assume that there is a price rise in the pipeline for Sky as they are paying more for soccer next season, but to then have to cough up €223 on top of that? I think the bubble is about to burst, a lot of clubs froze their season ticket prices next season due to falling crowds. I can't see this Setanta package taking off unless they do something drastic.

Is the premiership all you watch?

600,000 people watched a Celtic v Rangers match on Setanta last season so it just shows how many people subscribed mainly for SPL football.

If you like your football then Setanta is worth the money.

    Correct
on the downside setanta have muppet commentators, poor quality picture(from what i remember)
I've seen nothing wrong with picture quality, their commentators are grand, sky's are better but apparently setanta are bringing in new commentators fro the new season
where as sky have all the interactive stuff and some decent commentators
Interactive yes, dunno if that will change, will it?

plus the football first on a saturday night + champs league + internationals.
You can always watch Champions League on RTE or ITV

    Tough one to call really...
Depends on when you like to watch games, Saturday afternoons and monday nights then Setanta, Sunday afternoons then Sky.

You could always get both though?

No, they are the ones Setanta will show, whatever used to be on Prem Plus will be on Setanta, only costing a lot more than the €70 season ticket. Can't help thinking that Sky are laughing up their sleeve at this deal.

Setanta will actually be showing less than what was on Prem Plus when you take away the Saturday 3pm matches.

I think Setanta will go the way of the Itv Sport channel.
They are paying ludicrously over priced amounts for coverage of second rate events.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Wouldn't surprise me if in a few years the only place you see Setanta Sports is while on holiday and a GAA match is on. ITV Sport Channel learned the hard way. Are Setanta as stupid?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

I watch Setanta a lot more than Sky Sports. If only the quality and coverage was as good.

Does this take pub viewership into account, where a lot of people may go to watch an Old Firm game as opposed to subbing to Setanta at home to view it?

I would not say many people subscribe to Setanta for SPL football,I would say a lot of Celtic/Rangers fans subscribe to see there teams but not many to see SPL games in general.

72 of the 79 games will feature either Man U, Liverpool Chelsea or Arsenal.

How is that possible? I thought that Setanta really just purchased the equivalent of the Prem Plus package and the top four clubs weren`t on Prem Plus all that often?? If its true Id be delighted as I already have Setanta for NASN and this is sweet for me as I no longer have to worry about games being on Prem Plus:D

That's what I mean though. I don't know any Celtic fan that doesn't watch them on Setanta every 2nd week. There'll be a lot more people watching premiership football on it.
