Hi, I work for a small business, we have to start backing up our files weekly, an It company recommended getting a server for several functions one of these would be for a tape back up, however the tape back up option (including hard ware and 10 tapes) came to roughly €700. Can I not use an external hard drive as a back up? the server i hope to get has 6 scusi hard drives, can the data not be mirrored onto a different drive? what about the option of backing up over the internet, i heard this is an option, anyone have any names of companies who do this? what is the best option?

Some general tips for ya OP:

    1. Avoid any kind of DLT tape. They are *very* prone to temperature over time and unless you are storing them in a climate-controlled server room (I think you wouldn't be) then they can become very unreliable.

    2. The smaller DAT-type tapes are usually very robust (forget the current format). But it can be expensive.

    3. Removable disks - good idea. You really need to store backups in a location physically seperate from the server though (in case the entire building catches fire)

    4. Mirrored disks - OK, will only protect you from a single drive failure but not from a situation where a user accidently deletes a load of files. If your server has 6 disks then make sure you are using RAID-5.

    5. Log - keep a backup log of when backups were carried out and by whom.

    6. Backup software - NTBACKUP comes free with Windows NT/XP and would suffice for your needs I think.
