Grey's Anatomy spin-off - will it work? [** SPOILERS **]

So.. apparently, ABC are all set to make way for a Grey's Anatomy spin-off next season with...
Kate Walsh (Addison Shepherd) leaving Seattle Grace for a new clinic in Los Angeles.

We got a taster last night in a 2-part episode in her new clinic - complete with more prolific well-known actors than in Grey's.

Most importantly, we've got the fantastic Paul Adelstein (Agent Kellerman from Prison Break) playing an doctor seeking relationships on the Internet. The other supporting actors include Taye Diggs ("Day Break"), Merrin Dungey (Francie from "Alias"), Amy Brenneman ("Chasing Amy"), Chris Lowell (Piz from "Veronica Mars"). Just a very accomplished and promising cast).

The show is a guilty pleasure for me. I typically hate all this crappy pappy 'Desperate Housewives-chick" stuff but i do find the medical conundrums occasionally enthralling and the dialogue is quite witty at times.

But in saying that, the dull drab repetitive storylines as of late have bored me immensely.

This new clinic was a breath of fresh air. Some stuff was great - Taye Diggs and Paul Adelstein were both fantastic in the show and i hope they're put to good use if the spin-off does indeed go ahead!

However.. there was one or two quibbles like the voice in the elevator moment seemed too "Ally McBeal".

It could work though.. it all seemed quite fresh. The character and actors seemed to be better defined and more comfortable in an hour of screentime than the characters in Seattle Grace after three seasons.

Whats the point in having a thread where most of the first post is covered up??

What's the point of that post? Does it add anything to the thread? Hmmmm.. no, i don't think it does.

The reason it's in spoiler tags is simply because most of the information in that divulges information revealed in an episode shown in the US 2 nights ago, and possibly plans for future storylines.

Read it if you want. Otherwise, quit the bitching!

I think I would've liked the spin off a lot better if they hadnt just taken over an entire Grey's Anatomy episode with it. I was really looking forward to this episode because of all the Meredith stuff, but it was totally overshadowed by the spin-off crap. I dont care about those people, I care about the regular cast. They ruined what could have been a great episode.
I'm totally pathetic and cry at everything, but the way they showed Susan's death was so unmoving. And the slapping had the potential to be a fantastic scene - but it just wasnt.

I feel like I was robbed of an episode of the show that I actually want to watch!

I saw the first of Thursday's episodes and thought it was abysmal. While Addison is one of the few characters I like in GA, the whole setup in Beverly Hills looked dire. But yeah, it could well work if they run the spin off during the main show's downtime. Not sure I like the idea of using an entire cast of leftovers from popular series from day one though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,056 ✭✭✭claire h

I think it looks interesting but having it as part of a GA episode was a stupid idea; it detracted from the Seattle plotlines, which deserved more attention, and it suggested that the spin-off isn't strong enough to stand alone. I'll watch it if it gets picked up.

I thought the slap scene was good, out of nothing I nearly started blubbering - I will admit Grey's has reduced me to tear many times. As far as Private Practice goes - I liked some of the characters played by Taye Diggs, Tim Daly, (Judging) Amy Brennaman (?) and Paul Adelstein. I thought Kate Walsh "hammed" it up a bit too much, I've grown to like Addison on Greys but don't think she fits into PP. I wouldn't mind PP coming to air for the other characters but I've leave Addison out of it.

I like your one from judging amy and the guy from prison break too. Don't think the spin off looks any where as good as greys anatomy, but if its another show and has a few good characters I might try watching the first few episodes. Seemed a bit corny though and with the older characters wouldn't interest me as much.
Greys anatomy storyline lately seems to be a bit all over the place, I guess though there just trying to set up the story for the season three ending so they have somewhere to go for season 4

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

The second part of that episode was even worse than the first one, and what's even worse is that it pushes the season total to 25 episodes - how is that supposed to fit on two DVDs? Well, I'm sure the eh, people who make the officially released DVDs will find some way around that.
I think I can safely say I now hate every single moaning, whining baxter of a character on the show, up from about a 75% rating a few weeks back. Pity, this show definitely had something for the first couple of seasons, some secret-shame must-watch hook, but I think its BP is crashing to unrecoverable levels as it careens drunkenly towards the finale of a season that really had no point whatseover.

The general consensus is that the spin off storyline was terrible. Personally, I actually prefered it to the Seattle Grace stuff. The cast was brilliant and likeable. Great to see Alias' Merrin Dungey as well as some familiar faces like Amy Brenneman, Chris Lowell, Taye Diggs and Tim Daly. I'm not sure about the talking elevator - it seemed to Ally McBela-ish. But with MArti Noxon being showrunner expect the mood to darken considerably.

Whether it will be successful or not - I think it will. 21million people watched this episode and most will follow it to a new night when its picked up.There is room for improvement but at least now they have time to do so.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭beanyb

Yeah, but 21 million people watched this episode because they thought there'd be more than about 20 minutes of actual Grey's Anatomy randomly placed throughout the 2 hour slot. That's just the average Grey's Anatomy ratings - it had nothing to do with the spin-off.

I expect it to get picked up, but I seriously doubt it would match those ratings again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 569 ✭✭✭failsafe

Looking back on it, i think i like the new spin off, but i felt so pissed off when i was watching it, as they basically forced an hour long promo for another tv show down my throat, and in the middle of my greys anatomy.
If they had had an hour grey's and an hour that seperate, and let me choose to watch PP, i would have taken to it much better. Or even if the other characters were introduced through their interaction with adison, but the fact that they had entire story lines and scenes without her, then tried to package it as an episode of greys just cheapened the whole thing for me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 291 ✭✭pokerwidow

I never knew there were another two episodes left. As a series finale that sucked, but now it wasn't too bad. I loved seeing Kellerman as a goofy emotional immature internet porn addict. The PP scenes were all funnier than SG, but then I don't watch G'sA for the comedy.

    Really? That episode re-inforced mine.

    The moment with
Izzie and George discussing Meredith failing and how to help her.. with the three mountaineers discussing their friend in earshot with apt (although altogether corny) lines "you never leave a man behind" - eeeeuurrgghh! That moment alone made me squirm.

Thought it was an utterly dire episode - can barely remember anything that happened in it. That's how much it washed over me!
Oh.. another love interest for Derek? What are the bets she's signed up for next season?

As I'm going to move to a place without uncapped BB, I've very seriously been thinking of dropping GA. It's been very poor of late and characters I once liked, I now want to slap. Slap hard. Meredith's voice-overs grate more and more and I can't help but constantly recall Scrub's brilliant dissing of them recently.

Spin-off has potential but I recognised too many faces from it. I started laughing when
the girls all did a "Diet Coke" break to watch Piz walk by. I mean it's Piz!
. I also couldn't take Francie seriously, particularly when it looked like she was eating chocolate ice-cream ;)
    The elevator scene was
very like Ally McBeal. What's the bets that we won't really ever see this security guard and only hear her disembodied voice?
    .

It might have potential, but I'm worried already by the fact that they're so heavily sign-posting relationships. There's a bit too much of that nowadays in GA, particularly with all the weddings. I might give the show a shot but this failed to sell it to me as a "must see".

Well obviously you're never going to get away from the mushy clay-foot-hero crap that plagues the show but
the guy had an AXE in his HEAD! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭beanyb

I love GA. I'm pretty much obsessed with it, but even I hate the last few episodes. The parallel between patients and the doctors had always been there and always fairly cheesy but they're just bringing it to a whole new level of cheese.
The never leave a man behind thing was so cringeworthy

Plus the complete destruction of all of Derek's positive characteristics.
They potentially had a really great storyline with the way he dealt with Meredith's drowning. It started off great and then just went the strangest way - it makes no sense. He's just wandering around sulking like a big baby.

    Oh and basquille -
there are rumours going around that she has been signed on. I think it's almost safe to assume that the girl at Joe's is Lexie Grey, Meredith's other sister. They randomly mentioned her name a couple of times, she was wearing black and she had a 'bad day.'

It would be overly ridiculous but with the way GA is going I honestly expect it.

Sorry to ask a silly question but was 3 series of this only ever made? Saw season one and part of season 2. Excellent show. If there's a spin off I think it may work e.g. look at how Fraiser evolved from Cheers and no-one held out much hope for it.

It's still being made. Season 3 is just finishing up in the US on Thursday. But there'll be a Season 4, and probably 5, 6, 7 etc. It's the highest rated TV drama in the US at the moment. Though ratings have been falling a little in the last few weeks.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Wow. Don't think I've ever cringed as much as I did watching that last (and that definitely was the last one for me) episode. What the hell happened to this series?

Yes, the last episode was atrocious!
They really went all out this year on destroying any impending happiness for the characters:

    - George failing exams
    - Bailey not getting to be chief
    - Burke and Christina not getting married
    - Meredith's sister being the girl Derek hit on
    - Alex missing his chance with Ava / Rebecca

An atrocious finale to an all-in-all, very middling series. Season 2 was actually better than the first but this season was just SO poor!

Probably won't have much of an option but to watch next season as girlfriend absolutely loves it... but even she agreed that the finale was a big pile of cack!

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 30,661 Mod ✭✭✭✭Faith

My flatmate and I are both HUGE GA fans, but seriously, this season has been rubbish. All that shíte with Meredith "not swimming" was just boring. I want her to die. She's an awful character.

My problem with shows like this is that they never just let the characters be happy. What's wrong with Mer & Der having a little time being happy, without
her trying to kill herself and him chatting up other women
? NONE of the characters are happy and it's just depressing.

Sounds awful  as im just watchin it on RTE2 as i dont have $ky   Btw-Thanks for the spoiler.

Something should happen for 'Izzie's' character as she's hot stuff, but does anything nice ever happen to nice people

That's ok, & no offence intended. I knew that when i read there were spoilers, as you like a little titbit of the ep. to go on & where it stands later on, but the main part was covered.

As you may get spoilers/reviews but the main thing that always (nearly) you'll watch it anyway just to see for yourself. IMHO.

BTW she's cute for a spin-off, not that im bothered about it as you dont get many red-heads heading a spin-off
if you'll excuse the pun! :D

A drive-by or a piano on the head would be the kindest thing for all concerned.
I can't think of a single moment from the three seasons that would suggest she was a nice person, unless by 'nice' you mean dull, moany, whiny, self-centred, emo minger.

Oooh, get her, I think this show seriously brings out the beotch in me!

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,003 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

I think the finale has done it for me too - awful stuff:
Not only have we everyone being miserable, we also have painfully tedious metaphors about climbing mountains and being friends from the mountaineers - why it's almost like they were discussing the trials of the interns!

The Burke leaving Christina thing barely made sense - why not just postpone the wedding... And so forth.

Anyone else, who is fed up with GA, going to give "Private Practice" a chance anyway?

I will.. simply because it has a more likeable cast. Especially Paul Adelstein will make it watchable!

Im a huge greys fan and although there are times (like any show) it gets annoying but we always find something there (for me its mcdreamy :D )

the season has been depressing but if spin off happens then I will miss the character cause i think she is really good in the show!

I just dont know where it will go with everything! there is so much happening for all the char's - there will be plenty to keep us occupied!!! (i wanted to write more but i dont know how to do spoilers :( )

I know i would definetly be watchin the spin off just for Paul alone aswell - i love him! miss him already in Prison Break!

The finale sucked. Just plain sucked. And this is coming from somebody who absolutely LOVES Grey's Anatomy. The entire finale was so contrived, and just didnt make any sense. Especially the
Meredith/Derek break-up. It was just a break up for the sake of it, which is really annoying.

I'm still going to watch season 4, but I'm not excited about it really. There's no suspense about what happens like there was before, just because it was so all over the place. So since my enthusiasm for actual Grey's has waned SO much, I have no interest whatsoever in watching Private Practice.

The finale sucked big time and I will be not really too fussed about the next season.

I mean every show needs some happiness
but for everything to fall apart the wedding thing to me was just beyond the joke, Some one should have got a happy ending, maybe the chief did kinda.

Basically it spoiled the entire season for me and the gf

Are you's talking about the series ending in the US or recently on Living?
Also what is Private Practice & when is the spin-off gonna take off.

    Thanks.

Back when the show started in the States, there were supposed to be 13 episodes in the first season, but for whatever reason they ended up only showing the first 9 and holding on to the remaining 4 for Season 2, even though they re-edited and whatnot so that they work as opening-episodes-of-a-season instead of dramatic-closing-episodes. The UK airing decided to go with the original plan, which because of re-editing turns into 14 episodes, I think...

So there's one version of the boxsets that has 14 episodes in Season 1 and 23 in Season 2 (I think 22 + a 'catch-up' recap thingy), which I think is what the UK edition has (Amazon.co.uk seems to be using the US info, but the comments from buyers indicate that's not accurate), and the US edition follows the 9 episodes for Season 1, 27 for Season 2 plan. Works out to the same.

Um, that was a lot of information for a very simple question. :) Episode 9 is the one where Addison turns up at the end, so if you've seen past that, the UK version of the DVDs should have all the ones you're looking for.
