Hi, I recently came across an unusual problem in XP with the add/remove programs section. For some strange reason after uninstalling a few programs the program entries have been replaced by large white spaces and I cant remove them because I dont know what they are .

I have tried some freeware utilities but they are unable to find invalid entries. Anyone ever encounter such a problem?

yeah have the same problem in work after installing windows security updates. haven't had time to try and sort it out, as it doesn't affect the performance of the machines, so it can wait!

Well this really cant wait too long as it belongs to a customer of ours. I would expect this from win98se but not xp. I have heard of corrupt or missing uninstallers but this is something I haven't seen before. :\

It's more then likely incorrect referenceses in the registry that are pointing to programs that are no longer there?

In fact this is exactly what it is & it can easily be corrected using the Windows Registry Editor (regedit)
If you are comfortable using the editor this is what you need to do:

It's a hosed 'DisplayIcon' in a registry entry in the following registry key:

Run regedit from the run command & navigate to this key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

The value for DisplayIcon should be a path to an icon file, plus an optional comma-followed-by-a-number. If the optional number is -1, you'll get the big blank. Just search through the key mentioned above for "DisplayIcon", checking the value of each. If you find a ",-1" in any of them, remove the comma and the -1 and you'll be OK.

If you prefer to not edit the registry you can use these programs.

PC Tools "Registry Mechanic" will tidy them up for you.

Another program is X-Setup Pro v9
