    Hi,

I have an egyptian friend who has a UK visa but not a visa for the Republic of Ireland. We are going to be in the North of Ireland soon for a weekend and I was just wondering if a visa was required to travel from the north to the south. Do they ask for travel documents when u cross the border in a car or on a train. And does anyone know if its difficult to get a visa for the Reublic and how long does it roughly take. Its just a holiday visa that is needed.

I've never heard of document checking. I've driven up many times, never once met a checkpoint either way.

Even going to Britain on the ferry or plane i've never been checked for a passport. as far as i know us and them have an agreement so that passports are not necessary.

Your friend is Egyptian, so not Irish, but I think the way of thinking is that if he got into the UK, he would have had to have had visa and passport checked on the way in there so he's free to travel to/from ireland.

I stand to be corrected on any of the above though.

no you do not need a visa to enter the republic, once you hav a Uk visa you are free to travel anywhere within the EU.

Yes, your friend needs an Irish Visa. A UK Visa does not entitle you to visist the Republic of Ireland or any other european country. (not like the Schengen Visa)

You even need a visa if you are a Visa National who legally resides in Northern Ireland.

An Irish Visa takes between 4 and 8 weeks.
