We have all seen some terrible martial artists in the movies. What does everyone think the worst is. I am going to give a few names although its debateable if a few of these are actually martial artists. Uma Thurman, as kill bill sucks. Steven Seagal as he is 70lbs overweight. Jackie Chan, as he sold out to hollywood, uses wires now, and is a terrible actor in English. David Carradine, as he did kung fu appallingly. Ralph Macchio, the karate kid (I like these films, but some dont). And Lastly Hillary Swank, for the terrible the next karate kid.

Id have to say the worst are Segal,Van Damme,Chuck Norris and Don "The Dragon"Wilson

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Pride Fighter

The Dragon is a great martial artist. His films suck, I will give you that. He was a multiple kickboxing world champ. I take your point on all the others though. Except for the Chuck. A BJJ black belt, karate black belt and student of Bruce Lee. He would have a chance in UFC if he was in his 20s with that skill level.

I dont know much of him as a martial artist but his films did suck and I thought Chuck Norris is a BJJ Purple Belt but he can kick the Machado's asses: But as far as UFC is concerned,Chuck wouldnt stand a chance in his prime

bruce lee....gunn fu, judo, fencing, tae knwo do, western boxing...
An mma stylist if ever there was one...

Chuck Norris...tang soo do, tae kwon, muay thai, bjj...

Now if these guys were in their prime today they might not be the best mma competitors in the world but I'm sure they could give you a run for your money bjj-fighter...

    ;)

    Try me, Pride fighter
You say you like the Karate kid movies and I don't know anything about MA movies?
    Don't make me puke

    don't encourage me

    oh you did it....

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyCj27saAYc

Before mma...before time...there was chuck norris...

Watch chuck use his ''amazing'' stand up skills and terrific takedowns and sexy submissions on many a ''caged'' fighter including The oringinal Randy...Randy ''the macho man'' Savage...

Lovely armbar and attempted omo plate by the chuckster...
God bless the man he does push himself regardless of age to show alot of diversity in his martial arts fight scenes....

Well done to him and all the old skool who adapt...and improve continuosly...

You will have to see martial arts films in all their glory to realise how bad kill bill is. Ichi the Killer is 50 times more bloody than kill bill. How many of the films have you seen on the best martial arts films thread? All of these films rule. I am afraid you dont have much knowledge on the subject. There is nothing wrong with the karate kid its fun for all the family.

oh no! I know nothing about 'martial cinema' either, whatever will I do? I feel so ignorant. Anyone can stay at home all day and watch old martial arts movies.

Kill Bill was a great movie. Martial cinema my ass. Get a life.

That clip of Chuck Norris destroying the Machado's is brilliant! I think Steven Seagal is great, action entertainment at it's rawest most eye squintingly pure form...:p

Seen quite a few actually over the years.
    Fcking trend nazis
Your problem with Kill bill is it was a mainstream movie - unless it is made in the 70s and no-one has seen it you won't rate it except bizzarely the Karate Kid (now thats a poor trilogy gaiiiii)

Without a doubt bjj fighter, if the UFC had been eveloving when he, Benny 'The Jet' Urqidez, Bill "Superfoot' Wallace etc were in their prime, no doubt most of them would have adapted and been among the leading MMAers of their day. I would go as far as to say that the Chuckster would have been the middle weight Chuck Liddell of his day - if the UFC had been around. As you say yourself - " I dont know much of him as a martial artist". Therefore is it fair to dismiss him, or indeed any other fighter, who proved himself so often in the ring.

As for Chuck's movies, I didn't like the Rambo, super American patriot hero cramp like Missing in action etc. But if you were to take say the Octagon (btw, instead of a boxing type ring, the UFC chose it to be an octagon with the movie in mind to give it more Hollywood appeal -fact), compared to some of Bruce's earlier films - The Big Boss for instance were Bruce was kicking daggers back at the bad guys, Chuck's films were a mega improvement. BTW Enter the Dragon is my favourite MA film of all time - what's yours bjj fighter ?

My vote goes to Cynthia Rothrock

    http://www.cynthiarothrock.org/filmography.html

Many's the time that I've been subjected to her crappy MA movies when, as a child, we only had two TV channels in South Africa.

    XMA FTW!

She used to play some kind of character called China O'Brien or something - embarassing. The worst MA film of all time, her and Fatty Seagull ( Steven Seagal), the Muscles from Brussels, in a movie together.

BTW, the black bloke in Walker, Cordell or something was he called, what was his MA background ? Also, since the Chuckster is in his late 50's now, how come no grey hairs ?

I shall have nowt said against that fine woman (look for her website and see who got a boob job - ahem http://www.cynthiarothrock.org/PHOTO/PIC_67.html) - by way of her films I was introduced to Yuen Biao and Samo Hung - getting all misty eyed here

Now I know that movie has yet to be made :)

I suppose we must give her some credit for helping Samo Hung gain a bit of fame.

    I think he's quite decent.

And the muscles from Brussels is rubbish... did anyone catch him giving a little speech after Fedor's last fight with Bodogfight? Poser.

I liked kill bill. Very good cinematography.

I like all martial arts flicks, even the cheesy ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Clank

Pride Fighter, no need to go almost telling people off for liking Kill Bill, chill!(Ichi isn't a martial arts movie, why bring that up??Miike doesn't do martial arts cinema he does extreme cinema)
Anyway Kill Bill, it was pants, honestly it was a rehashing of numerous movies all put together into some westernised twaddle.Uma Thurman was not at all good.
It's the same with the Ring, The Grudge etc, none live up to their asian original.
But for anyone who isn't into asian cinema I can understand perfectly why you'd like it.(but I am so I don't.)

I brought it up because people think Kill Bill is the goriest film ever. It pales in comparison with Ichi.

    Ichi ochi horses cocky

    Clank
Everyone knows Kill Bill is a rip off of alot of Asian movies, Tarantino always admitted this and tips his hat at the old movies quite often.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 467 ✭✭Clank

Oh I know buck he admits it freely.
I like Tarantino in general just not Kill Bill.:)

Pride Fighter no one said Kill Bill was the goriest movie ever, did they:confused:

Ichi the Killer was an utter piece of crap. And there is nothing special about Asian cinema, Sturgeons Law still applies- 90% of everything is crud.
There are some truly great movies, Battle Royale comes to mind, but then western cinema has some great movies. And both have an infinitely larger number of bad movies.
Kill Bill was entertaining, and yes it made reference to load of asian movies, but THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT! And quiet frankly it seemed alot more entertaining than most of those original movies.

so what defines "the worst martial artist in the movies" - a standard actor/actress with no training trying to do martial arts??? or am I missing the point

it can be both: (a) a standard actor with no martial ability or
    (b) an actual martial artist whose acting ability and/or movies suck

i was just pointing out that the discussion has deviated somewhat from actual individuals to actual films.

I am surprised nobody has voted for Hilary Swank for the terrible Next Karate Kid. You all like million dollar baby too much.

How about the wooden fight choreography of the early bond films?
