Just got a text this morning from my manager confirming I'm in the starting lineup, well chuffed as i was left out last year even though I was the in form player, due to my age I'd say.

    Anyone else playing Metro?

I'm playing Rush on saturday in Rush, lovely course pity its only 9 holes, handy course though.

We played K-club on Tueday and beat them so we're playing Hollywood lakes or Rush in round 2.

Best of luck I'd rather play Hollywood lakes than Rush :)

We (Lucan) were dumped out by Hollywood Lakes in the first round last year, having won the Metro the year before.

We got a walkover against Luttrellstown last week as they couldn't put a team together :p We're playing the winners of Deerpark and Hollystown next. If we get through that....we're up against the winners of Hollywood Lakes/Rush vs Killeen.

    Interesting....:D

Btw Doc, did you play Metro last year for HW Lakes?

Off topic but anyway, Madds are the Lucan greens still like Augusta? Played there in the Leinster Boys last year and fcuk, they were quick.

They're certainly getting there cson. 2 weeks ago the ball wasn't running true on them as they had just been sanded. However, when I played them last weekend, I couldn't believe the difference in quality and speed.

Hats off to our greenkeeper, he has our greens in top condition from early May right through to the end of September for the last couple of seasons now.

I would put our greens up against any other greens in the country during the Summer months. Not only are they quick, but they are receptive too, not like some of the concrete car parks you get to play on in other courses.

Yeah i was on the panel last year for hollywood lakes. Was rather disgusted cause I was the form player shooting all 70's in practice but wasnt played cause it was felt i was too young at 18 years old.

Against Lucan their first player was late, so I played him when he arrived just for a mess match since he did eventually show up, I shot 3 over and I think was 8up after 9 or something.

    Still wasnt picked :(

Was frustrated cause we had a really solid team last year that coulda gone the distance. I think this year we have an amazing chance.

Hmmm...yes, I seem to remember this incident. Our player who was late was down as our first man out on the sheet. Our manager submitted the sheet even though our first player hadn't turned up (stupid thing to do, should have moved him back to the last match to give him as much time as possible).

Anyhow, when the first match was due to tee off at 3pm our guy still hadn't turned up so HW Lakes claimed the match. I then went out in the 2nd match. At 3:10, our "first guy" arrived and we asked if he could be included and HW Lakes said no.

Rules are rules I suppose but it went totally against the spirit of the game...I remember there were a few very angry heads in our party that evening.

In all fairness it was a sound beating anyway, and he wouldnt have made a difference, and he DID play a member of hollywood lakes, me, and was 9dwn after 9 so :P

Well just back from my big day in Rush. Was my first inter club adult comp, and I was put out first :(

Halfed my match which was a great achievement, the match was brill only one hole halved and never was it more then 1 up 1 dwn, I shot a gross 74 as did my opponent. Sank a 15 foot birdie on the last to tie to level, and as we went to the 19th tee box where called in as match was over.

We had won 5 at home.

    Match finished

Hollywood lakes won 5 matches out of 5 in Hollywood.
Hollywood lakes won 1, halved 2 and lost 1 in Rush.

So I think we play Kileen next, bastards wanted to play k club.

Congratulations to Killeen on their win against Lucan yesterday in what were trying conditions to say the least. Came down to the last putt on the 18th hole in Lucan with a young lad from Killeen holing a tricky left to right 6 footer for par and the match overall.

Rather_b_diving - did you play and how did you do in your match?

Congrats to Kileen ,a solid team, im still being a bitter old fart i got dropped for that match gainst kileen.

I didn't play but was in Killeen for the match. God the weather was terrible - some of the lads went out expecting a summers day with no rain gear or umbrella - one of them was like a drowned rat when the team was called due to greens flooding.

One of our guys came up against Conor (14 year old from Lucan) he was 2 under gross from 6th to 16th - he played unbelievable and will prove you don't have to be a long hitter to play good golf.

Great match a pity only one team can go through.

I was out in hollywood yesterday from like 3-7and for the most part was lovely weather, for a small portion of the back nine got a light shower but mostly fine.

Kileen had an oldish gentleman playing against us (hollywoodlakes) he was first out and he was very impressive. Short game was "delish" and his driving was long and consistent. Our players were very complimentary and impressed with the kileen team. Perhaps one to eye for the finals.

Yeah, Conor was beaten in the deciding match on the 18th. He was one of three 14 year olds on our panel, two at home and one away. The other two lads won their matches. All three went straight from the Junior Cert exam halls to the course.

On a personal note I was happy to win my match 3&1 in Lucan, having not played very well to be honest. I have never pitched as bad in all my life. Jimmy Bruen this weekend so need to get that part of my game sorted quick.
Great match a pity only one team can go through.

Agreed. Good luck in the next round.

So to be playing the Met cup you really need to be a bandit off 9 or if you were off 9 in 2008 and down to 6 in 2009 then you're ok to play?
It seems to me from reading the mails that lads off 10 or 11 or even lads genuinely playing to 9 will find it tough in this competition.
Still though, singles matchplay is a great format.
    I rather foresomes though.

Eh, all those posts prior to Garda S Horgan's are from Metro Cup 2007....

PS: Garda, I wish to report a roberry... of my avatar by you!!! ;)

I know it's an old post but my logic is still the same.
I would be off 11 and not a bandit at 11. If I shoot 78 then I'm very happy but I'm wondering if the Met cup is anything like the Pierce purcell where the 15 handicappers could play off 10 if they had to.
I'll look into the robbery issue for you. If you can send me on the ownership rights to the image then we can get it moving. 8)

Lowest handicap has to be between 9 and 11 in 2008 plus the usual 3 qual comps. I doubt that there is a golfer in Ireland who finished between 9&11 in '08 and is now playing off 6. Oh, and change your avatar please 1 sheet is enough :D.

Before I even think about my goals for 2010! Generally speaking whats the handicap range for the Metro Cup, is it really nine handicappers with the odd guy off 10 thrown in?? Obviously it depends on the quality of players in your club… from the posts on this thread players seemed to be better than 9 handicappers…

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 220 ✭✭Garda S Horgan

Guys off 9 playing to a 5 handicap would be the goal.
If you're off 11 then forget it.

It's no different to P.Purcell where the 15 handicapper need to be going around 8 or 9 over par.

You'll get by a round or 2 if you've a team off 9 and playing to that, but you won't get much farther.

GUI golf is just a load of bandits to be honest.
Too many clubs are not cutting people properly and lads playing all year in team events and avoiding singles need to be cut to the bejaysus.

    Yours etc,

Such is life... you'll come up against that a few times alright but I wouldn't say it's all bad. I did play against an 18 handicapper in the mixed this year that should be 8 or less... certainly that was pathetic, particularly when shots are given in that competition which is a bigger pain in the ass. But on all other occasions I felt the handicaps I played against in interclub were fair...

So I take it you had a bad experience?! I hear some clubs are worse than others, suppose the usually kind of stuff, but with home and away legs it must even itself out. Say someone who plays to a good 9 in their home club may struggle to play to that away from home....

So you'd really want to be playing to a strong 9 I take it..
