BMW Insurance quote vrs Carol N

    Guys,

I just bought my first bike a 2004 BMW F650(restricted). I was ringing around the insurance companies and to be honest I found the process mad.
    My Details as follows:
    Age:36
    Licence:Provisional (1 month)
    NCB:0

Carol Nash quote me €1038 Third Party Fire and Theft
    Quinn won't Quote me
Aon: After ages trying to get someone to answer the phone they said they will only quote me when I get recognised training (chicken and eggs scenario)

I rang BMW Insurance and they quoted me 1300 for 3rd Party fire and Theft, so I told them the quote I got from Carol Nash so BMW straight away drop their quote to 900 a whopping €400 drop.

I guess I should rin CN back and see if they will drop their quote further. I can't believe that there is that much of a swing in what people can reduce a premium by.

For those worried about my choice of 1st bike I am taking it easy and will not be taking it on the road before my professional instructor says that I am ready.
    Cheers

    Cionn

Why? F650 is a good choice for a learner, not too heavy and not so light as to be blown all over the road, powerful enough when unrestricted but not gutless when restricted, not too much plastic. Only drawback would be seat height if you're short in the legs.
The idea that you have to start off on a 125 or less is a load of cr*p imho, what's important is getting proper training and wearing proper gear always. That insurance quote doesn't sound too bad by Irish standards. Good luck with the bike.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

I've got the same bike as my first bike (About six weeks now).

My instructor said that it's a great starter bike as big bikes go... I find it great for commuting and the height is great for being able to see over traffic.

Definitely not a bike for the shorter folk, but I do know a guy who is 5' who rides one... he can't use the centre stand!

Quinn are very competitive. I moved to them a few weeks ago. Did they give a reason why won't they quote you? Shame..

more than likely because he doesn't have any NCB. They dont seem to want first timers. Very few get a quote or are told they will need a Aon grade 2 assessment to get covered

I am waiting to see what Carol Nash call back with, I'll post when they give me numbers. I think anything under a grand is good.

I'm 5'11 so should be tall enough for the bike. Picking it up on Friday so happy days.

Now to start looking for a reasonably prices tank bag and top box.

Couldn't agree more with you! People were telling me I was mad to get a Bandit 600 as a starter bike and I was thinking "They must think I'm handicapped or something"!

Cionn your choice for a first bike was perfect as far as I'm concerned...

BMW are actually Eagle Star. That is a ridiculous drop. Historically there was very little room to reduce premiums through getting competitive quotes, but thankfully (to MAG and others) things are changing at last..

    My experience last year:
    AON: That'll be 1,300 euro
    CaroleNash: That'll be 2,100 euro
Me: But I'm 35, full ncb, full clean license?
    CaroleNash: That'll be 2,100 euro
Me: But Aon are quoting me 1,300 euro
CaroleNash: Hmm.. That is cheap. Anything else we can help you with?
    :(

Quinn quoted me, 0 NCB, 24, cbr125r - think its more to do with the bike then the NCB... looks like they arent recognising factory restrictions either (aon being the only ones that do as far as I can see)

I got an unrestricted zzr600 for my first bike, loved it, and them moved to a R1200GS Adv after 4 months. Get the training in and be *reasonably* sensible and it is no problem.

Before I started work in the UK and had access to the wonderful thing that is Direct Access, I was planning to do my test in Ireland and I was looking at a 650GS. I was told they are great starter bikes.

Quinn quoted me with 1 years NCB (on a moped) for my F650GS and I'm 25, they were much cheaper than AON or CN.

CN seem to have priced themselves out of the market completely, my new policy with AON was 1/4 of what CN wanted.........ymmv, as they say.

And I'm not the only one, - wife went to Quinn.

And to think that CN were once touted as the saviour of Irish market, now theyr'e just as bad as Norwich Union ever were (remember them !! )

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

There is a lower seat option for the F650GS which makes the seat height 780mm. I have a second hand seat for sale, its red & in perfect condition. I changed it because I prefer black. I have had lots of bikes over the years and I think the F650GS is a great little bike, especially in city traffic.

Chunkylover, how much were you allowed for the F650 at trade in. Cionn, how much did you pay for your F650.

I'm looking at getting the new F800ST (factory restricted), but my head is melted trying to sort out insurance; 20yrs old, full licence. Has anyone got the number for BMW insurance?

    Cheers.

Even factory restricted, it's going to cost you the price of a small house to insure it.. and BMW have been working out a lot more expensive than other insurers..

    Number: 1850 222 111

At least if you're not happy with a quote (or the service you get) you can go elsewhere. That wasn't possible in the old Norwich Screwnion days and the worst thing was knowing that they had you totally over a barrel. Either pay them their telephone number quote or give up biking.

Quinn certainly are offering some very competitive quotes at the moment but being new to the bike market, it remains to be seen if they can keep their rates at that level. Hopefully they've got their sums right and renewals will be in line with the first year premiums.

    Quinn Direct
    07 F800ST (FR)
    20 y/o
    Full licence
    0 NCB
    TPO €1,600

I was delighted with that quote, especially since CN and BMW told me to PFO until I was 28.

I think they only gave me that quote because I already have a car and bike insured with them. I've given them over €10,000 over the past 3 years and never claimed so I would have been annoyed if they didn't quote me.
