im 20 and don't know where my life is going

i don't know what type of job I want to be honest

i didnt do the best in secondary school (passed all my subjects)because i taught i wanted to be a electrician but once i finished my exams i worked for a electrician and mg it was horrible. The fella treated me like a dog and after a while i knew it wasn't the type of job i wanted

im now doing a college course which im not really liking
    its ok

    all about IT(computers)

the funney thing is that we only opened a computer recently (like a month ago) and now im doing exams

im doing work experience in the summer

and i talk to my mother about it and she says'how do i know its not the course for you if you didnt even start your work experience'

my question is how do you find out what you want to do

i was thinking of the gardai but im still unsure and when i bring this up with my mother says 'if i finished the first year in college, and then decide to do gardai, that course will look good on my C.V'

i dont even know what the gardai are like
im going to a open day in the garda college this may

and what are the subjects like etc

i wouldnt be the best at studing , not sure how you even study ?

Dont worry, all garda's i have come accross didnt even do any study when they were in templemore and they have gotten away with it.

One thing though, unless you really want to be a garda i dont know if its a great job for someone who is unsure. If you didnt like being treated like a dog from your 1 boss, how do you think you feel when its 90% of the public doing it?

but the thing about it being treated badly by my boss is that i found it hard to get my wages off him and no over time what so ever too

i wouldnt care about being treated badly by the public to be honest

another thing is how do the work hrs work
    is it
    6.00am-2.00pm
    2.00pm-10.00pm
    10.00pm-6.00pm

that night work id say is very hard and you have to do that for a full week?

maybe it is hard. but i dont think there are many jobs out there that are not hard at times. and 90% of the gardai i know abseloulty love there job.

are you just looking for a job that involves no hard work?

every job involves hard work i know that

and i have no problem with that

but i would love to wake up content with myself that i found a job i love

(every job has its up and down but majority are ups)

What you like/ dislike about the course? Sounds like you should give it a bit more time (if 'it's ok'). It can take a while to get used to any new course/ worrk area, are you giving up at the first hurdle?
    all about IT(computers)

the funney thing is that we only opened a computer recently (like a month ago) and now im doing exams

What's the course? There's a lot more to IT than opening computers!

my question is how do you find out what you want to do

She might have a point, the work experience sounds like just what you need to help with your decision.

i was thinking of the gardai but im still unsure and when i bring this up with my mother says 'if i finished the first year in college, and then decide to do gardai, that course will look good on my C.V'

This is true, they pay more depending on qualifications. Also, an IT qualification would give you freedom to work in different areas of the Garda organisation.
i dont even know what the gardai are like

It's a very tough job.. more of a vocation (for the good ones). The interview will require you to demonstrate a good understanding of what they do and your suitability. Going to the open day sounds like a good idea.

would even 1 yr done at my course look good at a interview with the gardai

and my course is to do with networking, software developement, operating systems and computer systems

the only subject i like there is operating systems

thats why i said the course was ok

and the work experience is in a company doing networking which im not interested in

its very hard to get work placement for 1st years

I'll say two things man. First off, it can take years to find out what you want to spend your life doing. I absolutely killed myself workign for the elaving to get the points for medicine, which i didn't get, was gutted, went off and did a degree in biomedical science, did a masters in analytical chemistry, and now I'm workign on a phD in molecular biology. Have already walked away from one serious committment 'cause it wasn't for me. Give it time, and don't be worrying about knowing what's right for you, you'll figure it out.

Secondly. it kinda sounds like you need to get the finger out. Maybe if you worked a little harder you might enjoy your course more if you were getting the results. Whatever you win up doing it's not going to be 100 % whatever you want, you have to do a lot of other stuff too. And if you're not willing to take the bad with the good you won't be happy anywhere.

Are you sure you didn't just didn't like your first job as an electrician because of your boss and not the work involved. It sounds like you just didn't like your boss so maybe you need to find another electrician job.

As for computers, I did Computer Science and I hated most of the modules but I'm really interested in computers and programming so it doesn't mean you won't like working in computers. My work experience was great craic, best part of the course IMO. Stick it out for the work experience. Work depends a lot on the team and company your with, not just the job your doing though.

I had a fair idea I wanted to work in computers but if your not sure, you could always take some online tests to see what careers they say your suited to. Now don't rely on it or anything but it might throw up something you know you have an interest in but didn't think of going into before. Don't dive into some off the wall suggestion from it though. At the end of the day, its up to you, what you want to do.
