You are entitled to claim the dole for the days you are not working. Have a look on http://www.citizensinformation.ie

    Part-time or casual work

You can get part-time or casual work and still be considered unemployed. If you get part-time or casual work (up to and including 3 days per week), you will be paid Jobseeker's Allowance for the full week, less 60% of your average net weekly earnings. If you have no child dependants, 12.70 euro per day is deducted from your average net weekly earnings and then 60% of the balance is assessed as your weekly means. From September 2007, 20 euro per day from casual work will be deducted from your average net weekly earnings and then 60% of the balance will be assessed as your weekly means whether you have children or not.

Read more about how casual work can affect your Jobseeker's Allowance.

Are you on a FAS Community Employment Scheme? If so, did you explain this to Social Welfare?

As long as it's less than 20 hours a week you are entitled to claim, the labour should know this, go in to them again and ask to speak to a supervisor.
