How to go about copyrighting/patenting something?

Hey all! Not really sure if this is the right forum for this kind of craic. Just wondering if anyone here knows what the procedure is for copyrighting an idea and roughly how much this costs? Or am I looking for a patent? Not really sure which one :o It's an idea for an invention.

There is a common misconception that copyright is the same as the patent process, or trademark registration. Copyrights aren't registered with anyone.
