Travel in Tibet

    Hi,

I'm planning a trip at the moment to India and Nepal and am hoping to make a stop in Lhasa as part of the trip. However I'm finding it very difficult to get proper information on the restrictions on travellers with regards travelling in tibet. I am getting the impression that tour operators and embassies try to exaggerate the difficulty of independent travel in tibet.

Lots of websites on the internet indicate that in order to travel to tibet, you need to be part of an organised tour group and that as well as your chinese visa you need to have a group tibet travel permit that they will organise for you in Kathmandu. They also say that even if you get a chinese visa in your country of origin, it isnt worth a damn because if entering tibet out of nepal you must get your visa from kathmandu by an official agreement made between the two countries. However, this kind of information that ive sourced comes from tibet travel faqs generally written by tibetan tour companies operating out of kathmandu.

So, for the sake of avoiding the exorbitant costs, and our unwillingness to be part of an organised tour group, we would like to travel to tibet indepedently. Stories from other travelllers and the lonely planet guide seem to think we can do this despite of all the counter information that I've found online. Its just hard to separate the fact from the fiction and its hard to tell if the information youre reading is up to date or not.

So, does anybody know what the real story is? have you visited tibet recently? and if so, how? what visas/permits do I really need and how do I apply for them?

I'd greatly appreciate the information, this is driving me mad.

    Thanks,
    Stephen.
