HD Photo netcast

Interesting netcast on HD Photo (Microsoft’s intended “replacement” for JPEG). They discuss the limitations of the .jpg file (eg 8 bit colour – ie only 256 shades of red from light red to black, same for green etc). HD Photo packs a lot more resolution into a given file size.

One wonders if Canon & Co will support this proprietary standard, and leave their still camera platforms open to Microsoft patent “terrorism”? One’s expensive SLR could become passé, unless a firmware upgrade supporting the new standard became available. (Unlikely – they will want you to buy a new product).

Or will a superior ISO standard emerge as a more acceptable alternative? As usual, the decaying, bureaucratic EU (population 494.8 million) is policyless and clueless on this front, and is leaving it up to the Japanese (population 128 million) and the US (population 302 million) to control the technology.

The netcast also discusses new software in the pipeline for intelligent image manipulation, and related matters.

Great links Probe. I'm looking forward to what the new format can offer, and that Photosynth thing is well cool. No idea what it's for but it's a great laugh to zoom about the place :)
