Ok, some of you already know the answer, but some of us (like me) still have some questions (hence the stupid stuff spewing out here)! Anyway, are there any "issues" regarding 64 bit processors (AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ for example), such as software or hardware compatibility? I have heard on certain tech shows that people have problems with 64 bit versions of Windows (is that even possible - is there even a 64 bit version of Windows XP (the new machine will have Vista unfortunately))? Just thinking of buying a newer machine. Thanks (and please don't be rude! LOL).

64-bit processors such as that AMD can run either 32-bit or 64-bit software. 32-bit processors can only run 32-bit software.
There is a 64-bit version of Windows XP and naturally a 64bit version of Vista, but different drivers are required. People having isses with a 64-bit Windows OS are most likely down to poor drivers, or no 64-bit drivers at all.

64-bit software doesn't seem to be of much use, at least at the current time, given that performance under a 64-bit Windows OS seems to be questionable across the board. Also, to my knowledge, there's a huge lack of 64-bit software - either available or being developed.

Simple answer... no, just run a 32-bit OS on it and you're laughing.

I would assume that any of the "mainstream" systems that you buy would have the 32bit O/S installed, and not the 64 bit then, and thus I shouldn't have to worry about it? Otherwise, how could I find out which is installed? I have noticed that the Nvidia site DOES have the option of drivers for Vista 32, and Vista 64.

These are two little Apps that will tell you if you have a 32 or 64 Bit system.

If you go to System in Control Panel (or whatever it's called in Vista - I forget - Windows Key+Pause will get you there too), it'll say which OS exactly you're running.

I don't know what Dell/HP/etc. are doing regarding this, but if they are shipping any of them with 64-bit Vista they'll have to support the drivers for these particular systems properly - of course that'll only apply to the hardware you brought off them :)
