Just been moved to a new table in a live tourney.Blinds are 400 - 800 and effective stacks are 30k.I have roughly 28k.Villian covers.

2nd hand i pick up 77 in the BB.
    Villian raises UTG+2 to 2400

    I call(comments)
    (5200)
Flop comes 8,4,3 with 2 diamonds

I check , He bets 6500 and i push in for roughly 19k more

    Is this standard or stupid?

Im not is love with it

you have just been moved to a new table and you do not understand what a raise from EP means from this villian. I am playing for set value only.

Hari - Kari Poker. I don't even like a call pre for set value as you cannot gauge what your implied odds are like on an A - 7 - 2 rainbow flop, or a 9 - 7 - 2 flop with two to a flush.

He over bets the pot. Doesn't look like a weak standard continuation bet to me atall. You have no idea what it means and whether this guy can be pushed off a hand.

I wouldn't play it like this myself.

Lloyd - what happened your first post and "fold pre flop"?

By this rational we should fold all mid/low pp's as we can not guage our implied odds? Hero is 35bb's deep and somebody has raised to 3bb's on his BB. It is costing him 2bb's to call!!

Im not buying this at all.

Noel, there are certain players who you should not call for set value against in that their particular range and style would make it difficult for you to get doubled up or paid off.

So against an unknown you would advocate a fold oop everytime?

Im not trying to pick holes here Lloyd, Im genuinely interested in the general consensus. I will always play for set value here, I suppose Im wondering if this is a leak in my game?

    call on the flop?

So let me paraphase the action. With a medium pair, with an overcard on the flop, and an opponent that has a completely unknown hand and unknown tendencies, you chose to go all in with a 35BB starting stack, not really having any idea where you are in the hand.

BTW - I think calling preflop and trying for a set is fine, but once you miss, you are done with the hand.

I would have bet out on the flop you would get alot more info. I don't like the cr here, there's not much point to it, you're really flying blind. Especially against an unknown.

    1600x15=24k

I'd prefer to raise but we're deep enough to call for set value alone, plus we win some of the time without hitting a set. folding is really bad,

    i agree with the above

as played - i kinda like the suicide move!!

without any reads/info, it looks like he has an overpair to the board and had overbet it due to flush draw (many player are scared of their shi*e of 'em), but it looks like you also have an overpair, or may have hit your set.

...i dunno, at least you've asked the question!!

your hand smells of a flush draw so theres no way he`s folding a better pair here, maybe A8 or 99. I dont mind folding oop if you have no reads, just fold and move on, 77 is hardly a guilt-edge chance.

actually you're dead right! i dunno what i was thinking!
you'd be better off making this move with a flush draw - at least you'd have 7 more outs to hit!

...if he made that overbet with AK or something equally as stupid, i dunno!!
