hey i have recently installed AVG anti-virus on my home pc and since doing so everything runs so slow. I had norton anti-vrus before this but it was bout year out of date (didnt use internet much on PC and have just got broadband instaled recently too) and since ive switched to AVG the pc sounds like its gonna take off or blow up...its constantly processessing but wen i shut down AVg its grand again and alot quicker! ive done all the scans too with AVg cos i know norton wasnt kept up-to-date and pc clear of any viruses.

Im wondering if there is another anti-virus i should install instead that would run better?
    thanks

Avg isn't resource intensive. What you've probably done is set it to scan on a daily basis, so it'll scan whenever you turn on the PC. I've used AVG on all my machines, ranging from Pentium 2's to my latest desktops and I've never had any issues, and it is, without a doubt, incomparably more resource friendly then Norton.

yep gotta agree with HavoK, AVG isnt much of a resource hog, just make sure it isnt real-time scanning like he suggested. When you got rid of Norton before, did it uninstall properly? You could disable some start up entries to help your pc speed.

Also make sure your not using two anti-virus programs, two firewalls, and two real-time anti-spyware protection programs.

Windows Live OneCare isnt that good..You may want to make sure there are no malware/worms on your pc by running HijackThis. I wouldn't rely on WLOC to get rid of it.

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

    HijackThis_sfx download

    Save HijackThis_sfx to your desktop.

Double-click the file then click the Unzip button. Then close the Self-Extractor window.

Using My Computer/Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe to run it. If you would like to make a shortcut for your Desktop so it's more easily accessable, right click HijackThis.exe and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).

Please run the extracted HijackThis.exe from now on. Delete any copies of HijackThis.zip that you have saved.

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan and save a log file. Copy the entire contents of that log and post it here

Your pc looks fine. However there's two small steps left to do

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

    * Click Start > Control Panel.
    * Click Add/Remove Programs.
    * Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
    * Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer.
    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Run HijackThis, click "Do a system scan only" and check this entry

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

    Then click "Fix checked".

You may be happy with Windows Live OneCare, but there are far better + free programs out there if you change your mind.

    what exactly does that do?
Thanks for all your help anyways. Im gonna try AVG again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,970 ✭✭✭ActorSeeksJob

If you are referring to ALCXMNTR.EXE, it's considered "Slyware", and is used to surreptitiously monitor one's actions. Its used by Realtek to gather data about customers.

    Some suggestions for programs

    Anti-Virus : AVG anti-virus, AntiVira, avast!

    Anti-spyware : AVG anti-spyware, Spybot - Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware, SpywareBlaster

    Firewall : Comodo, ZoneAlarm, OutPost

Make sure you uninstall Windows Live OneCare if you get any of these anti-virus/firewall programs or else there will be problems on your pc. Can only have one anti-virus and firewall on your pc

My home PC running a new install of AVG was doing a full scan whenever I switched it on.

I don't have AVG in front of me now but there is a Scheduled Tasks button in the Test Centre somewhere. Simply disable/delete the Daily Scan task and that should do it.

yep gotta agree with HavoK, AVG isnt much of a resource hog, just make sure it isnt real-time scanning like he suggested. When you got rid of Norton before, did it uninstall properly? You could disable some start up entries to help your pc speed.

Also make sure your not using two anti-virus programs, two firewalls, and two real-time anti-spyware protection programs.

stupid question could you explain this to some one who is new to all this tech stuff ,

not a stupid question at all, sure I made the mistake of having more than one anti-virus on my pc before

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Same goes for having two firewalls, and two anti-spyware real-time protection programs.

Hope that answered your question :)

i asked i have AVG AND SPYWARE DOCTOR is this a problem

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,970 ✭✭✭ActorSeeksJob

Not at all, avg is for viruses, spyware doctor is for spyware. running both their real time protection wont cause any problems.

although spyware doctor isnt that good, and you can get better programs for free if you want. I recommend AVG anti-spyware. It's way better than spyware doctor
