Where to buy EOS 30D

I arrived back in Dublin sunday and went to the Dart Lost & Found department to enquiry about my lost backpack including my EOS 350D and lenses and some jewelry (see my earlier post from a couple of weeks ago). I had little hope, and indeed nothing was found...

Now I'm looking into buying a new 30D next month or early july and am wondering where I'd get the best (and safe) deal. I'm looking for the kit with 17-85 IS lens, 50mm f/1.8, UV filters for both and a polariser for the 17-85. Probably want a 2GB Extreme II mem card and a spare battery as well.

Any suggestions? I'm looking into buying online this time as the camera shops here in Ireland are selling for too much €€€ (but that's no news).

On a sidenote, shooting with my dad's old Fujica SLR was fun, a manual camera with manual lenses and shooting on film was interesting... I was expecting a lot of over- or underexposed pictures, but I was quite pleased with the results to be honest. I'll start posting some pictures on my flickr later this week.

P.S. Some information about insurance would be welcome too :D

Thats no good, hard luck. I wonder where the point of failure was. I'd actually trust the general populace far more to hand the things in than I would the CIE lost and found staff once they opened up the bag and went "Oooo, a shiny digital camera !". On a related note, you might want to check the gardai, see if anyone handed anything in to them. If I found a high value item on the dart I'd hand it in to store street or something because of the above. Was it all insured ? or is it a case of 'stung once' and you're going to ensure you insure your next pile of kit ?

And yes, isn't film just great :D Its tough to screw up an exposure on print film. Well in fairness its easy to screw up an exposure, but next to impossible to screw it up so badly that you can't get a fine print out of it !

-edit- Actually, might be worth your while as well walking around all the camera shops in town to see if anyone has sold them a second hand 350d. You have the serial number right ? If you have some way of proving that its yours they're obliged to return it to you. The onus is on the retailer to make sure that 2nd hand goods are the property of the seller. Tough I know, but hey , if it gets you your camera back ... -edit-

The guy who was teaching my Photography Course works for a Camera Shop, and I was asking about the 30D, he said to hang on a while, as the 40D is imminent.

    Dimy,

my camera and lens are covered under my home contents policy which, because I live in shared rental is from Axa, the only company who provide home contents to people living with non-family members who are also not home owners.

I haven't - so far - had to claim off them.

Problem being that people in Cork photo shops know little to nothing about camera releases. Hell I've gone into shops in the past, asked them about a camera thats actually been released and they argued the point that it didnt exist.

But anyway. Get a 30D. The 40D or 4D or whatever theyre going to release may be out soon or in 12 or 18 months. Wait for that and then they'll be telling you the 50D will be out so wait for that. I'd prefer to have a camera in hand rather than chasing my tail waiting for new releases. The only people that know when the next camera will be released are Canon and they aint talkin'.

    Dimy,

I'de definitly ring around the Gardaa stations along the dart line (I know how tedious it might be but it could be worth the pain). I have all my kit insured under home insurance at my parents house. I took the minimum home insurance through AIB home insurance and they have add on "ALL RISKS" policies that you can specifically state what items you would like insured. You don't have to give them the specific value unless it over a certain amount (something like €1300 or something which would be your camera body). I've got 3 bikes covered (totalling about €4000), ALL my camera kit from my F100 to my D200, lenses, flahses, light meters, memory cards, radio transmitters, camera bag and even my ipod (referred to it as my portable storage device). I'd say my camera kit in total to replace new would be around the €8500-€9000 (Jeez, how did I end up spending that much money on kit over the years, I'm shocked after adding everything up!!??!!?).
My premium on that is around €420 a year which isn't too bad considering the house is covered too. The "ALL RISKS" policy covers your specified items against loss, accidental damage and theft anywhere which gives me real peace of mind especially when travelling. The premium will vary according to where your house is. I'm moving to Finglas later this year and that alone is going to add on €100 a year to my premium even though the new house has an alarm and my parents house doesnt!!!!!

    Pete.

Hey Calina, can you tell me more about this? I thought that no-one in ireland will insure removable contents for non homeowners..does it cost you much? Are the terms flexible? I've been trying to sort this for a while, also if anyone has reccommendations for insurance and global travel it would be appreciated..

Dimy, if you are buying - use the reccommended Kea in hong kong, highly reccommended by many here, myself included...

If they stick to their normal(ish) release schedule of one release every 18m the 40D should be released in September. No guarantees of course :)

I'm not looking for a yet-to-be-released model camera, as Rymus said I'd prefer to have a camera on hand rather than having to wait for a release. If I still had my 350D and wanted an upgrade I'd probably wait, but I don't have that luxary... I only have an old Kodak point-and-shoot digital camera now.

Also if the update is as "significant" as the update from the 350D to the 400D it's not even worth waiting for :). I'll have a look at that hong-kong site, if people here have good experiences with them I'll trust it.

I have my kit insured through my home insurance policy as an all risks item ... meaning I can take them out of the house ... my policy is through One Direct ...

As regard places to buy I'll PM you ... or you can take a look at the sticky thread ...

You could use your dad's film SLR :) Nah that's fair enough. I do have the luxury of being able to wait.

Some of the specs of the 40D were leaked last year on one of Canon's sites, but they could easily change between then and the final release date so it's a bit of an unknown. I've had very good experience with URGalaxy in HK so far. Being impatient I love their 3 day delivery!

I ordered my 30D through Digital Dev on Ebay. It came with everything you mentioned except a polariser. Saved about 600 euros on street prices to boot.
