I remember seeing this a few years ago and from what I remember its about the same as the number of people who get killed in traffic accidents.

Sorry though cant remember where i got it, will have a look.

This file shows some statistics... its 5 years old, but gives 50 years of stats...

or you could try a google search like - http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&q=suicide+rates+in+ireland&meta=

The rates for both self harm and suicide dont show the full picture. The self harm rates only apply to those who seek medical attention. Speaking from personal experience, there are vast numbers who dont. If you are researching the topic, maybe contact the National Office for Suicide Prevention.

    The answer is 'very few'.

.... if you go by the media reports of people's deaths.

    'entered the river'

    'died tragically at home'

'Gardai are not looking for anyone else in connection with his death'

    etc

    Nationmaster: http://www.nationmaster.com/red/country/ei-ireland/hea-health&all=1

    ...gives the following stats:

Suicide rate > Females: 4.1 per 100,000 people
Suicide rate > Gender ratio: 4.2 per 100,000 people
Suicide rate > Males: 17.4 per 100,000 people
Suicide rate > Middle aged: 26
Suicide rate > Young females: 2 per 100,000 people
Suicide rate > Young males: 21.5 per 100,000 people

National Office for Suicide Prevention: http://www.nosp.ie/mortality_statistics.pdf (2006 Report)

gives a nice 5 page PDF on the 2006 stats, as well as a graoh showing the doubling of suicide rates from 1987 to 2003.

This has been in line with the corresponding decrease in the proportion of the overall health budget that goes to mental health. According to Irish Health.com news articles it has almost half what it used to be in percentage terms of the total budget.
