UK Car Auctions

Anyone have any experience of car auctions in the UK, any thoughts on whether it is better to buy through a dealer or at an auction? Have a fairly specific type of car/spec in mind to buy (BMW 320d or 318i SE model - 4 or 5 years old), looks much cheaper to import from UK, just wondering is it even cheaper to get it at an auction or is it too risky? Finding it difficult to get catalogues for auctions online also, have found 2 sites where you can pay about £15 for 1 month's access, not sure which auctions are best though.
    Any help appreciated!

I'd say auction is best. why pay more at a dealer? warranty won't be much use in ireland. buying at auction is not that risky, you have something like an hour to bring the car back for a refund plus they will have done a hpi check.

Wilsons have auctions here, up north and in Scotland. Listings on their website for free: http://www.wilsonsauctions.com/dublin.asp

British Car Auctions do a BMW auction 2 or 3 times a month - don't bother subscribing as the auction catalogue is usually up in pdf format on their website a few days before hand.

All the milage at these BMW only auctions is warranted and you will save a bit over a dealer all right plus the fact the warranty is transferrable into Ireland if the car is still under warranty.

I bought an A6 earlier in the year from auction in the UK and couldnt be happier - saved about £2k Stg over garage prices

It may be worth trying one of BCA's specialist auctions. Quite often the Fleet car companies will have a special auction and those will include loads of 3 series BMWs, usually about three years old with 60k on the clock. The advantage of fleet cars is that they will be regularly serviced and well prepared for auction.

take a look at their website and it will give you more info.
