Is income tax legal?

A friend recently sent me a link to a film called "Freedom to fascism".

    http://www.freedomtofascism.com/

I'm pretty sure you can watch it for free on Google Video, but you may just want to watch the trailers on the website.

Although the film delves into all kinds of scary conspiracies regarding the American government, the initial premise of the film was a search to determine whether there exists a law requiring Americans to pay income tax.

    I won't spoil the film for you:D

To my question... Closer to home... Is there a law which forces Irish people to pay income tax?

Yep, the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 as amended every year since by the various Finance Acts.

various films on 'showcase TV' prove that income tax is not a legal requirement in some places,
I wonder where in the statute book or in the constitution there is a law that obliges persons or a person to be taxable under certain circumstances.
    excuse de spelling

He just answered your question. The law on tax is laid down (primarily) in the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997.

    Read it and see.

From your tone you won't believe anything presented to you. Figure it out for yourself so.

so you believe & accept all that is presented to you,

do you not challenge any thing?

You could try the empirical approach in that case -- don't pay any taxes and let us know what happens to you.

Here is an excellent site rebutting all the usual American anti-tax arguments. And in fact showing most of them to be not merely wrong, but utterly delusional.

As well as the legislation already cited Articles 21-22 of the Constitution make provision for the passing of "Money Bills" which concerns, amongst other things, taxation. So it's implicit from the text that taxation is constitutional.

The answer to the OPs question has been given. Tax is legal. I don't want this thread to turn into another thread used to bait or give cheap thrills to the various men on land arguments ....
