How can I play DVD's on my PC (through Windows Media Player)?

I'm trying to play DVDs on my PC but can't get it to work. I remember a while back on another PC I found a simple codec to install which would let me play DVD's through WMP but I'm unable to find it now.

I found a Power DVD cd that came with my dell, installed it but it would not work. I then downloaded VLC Player but that won't work either... (I get some c++ error)

Can anyone tell me where I can get the right code, or how i can fix the problems I'm having?
    Thanks

Yes. It has worked fine in the past, but I have formatted since...
Sometimes it plays for a second or two and then crashes

I think you'd be better off sticking with power dvd for dvd's media player is very limited in terms of what you can do with it, vlc and gom player are very good also for dvd movies on pc
