Help! Sky+ box won't switch on

Lots of thunder and lightning here this morning, so as a precaution I unplugged the Sky+box from the mains. However when I switched it back on in the afternoon it wouldn't power on properly. I've tried unplugging it again, waiting a few minutes, and then plugging it back in several times but with no luck. Sometimes the light remains red, other times it goes green after the first press of the power button (but won't go red if you press it again). In either case there's no picture being outputted to the TV.

I tried doing a forced software upgrade and while it was running I did get a picture on the screen - the usual white on black text about the software update in progress which will take 10 minutes, etc, but afterwards it had made no difference. I also have an ordinary Sky box connected to the same dish which I didn't unplug during the lightning and ironically that's fine.

One other thing - when I plug it back in after several minutes unplugged there's a mild 'beep' sound from the back of the box, which I don't think was ever there any time it was plugged in in the past.

Any ideas? It's a Pace BSkyB 3100, less than two years old.

i had a similar problem a while back and when i unplugged the phone line from the box the problem disappeared, this had something to do with my broadband i think? i had no adsl filter on the line attached to the sky box. this may not be the case for you of course but its worth a mention!

I realise this is a close the garden gate after the horse has bolted story...so apologies.
But FYI power can travel down the phone lines ( seen it happen on many phone systems etc over the years), so there is a possability that the box got fried during the electrical storm.

I am sure one of the guys here can put you straight on testing the box itself, but I suppose its something to remember for the future.

Sorry its not a very helpful reply.

    Chef

I'm afraid neither of the above suggestions could be the answer, as I didn't have the phone line connected in the first place. :)

Bizarre - I just tried it again after another couple of hours of being unplugged and it's working fine, phew! Fingers crossed it stays that way. Thanks for the replies anyway guys.
