As we all do I read Boards while playing MTTs. About a week ago, while doing both my laptop lagged so bad I thought it had totally frozen. I could't do anything, the mouse pointer moved but the "click" did nothing. Couldn't switch between progs, shut them down etc.

After 5 mins of "Ctrl/Alt/Del" eventually the task manager came up and it indicated a windows explorer problem.

I shut down and re-booted, back to the MTT and back onto Boards and it happened again. This time I had to shut down using the off switch which no-one likes to do.

I log back on and just play the MTT - everything is fine. After MTT, for an experiment, I go on internet while running Poker Stars and everthing jams again.

My lap-top is 3 years old. So I figured it can't handle the pace anymore and off I trot and buy a new one. Get it up and running (with Vista and all the bells and whistles) and settle into a MTT and log on to boards. Jams again!!

So it's not the computer. Can this be the connection? I run a wireless off my own broadband line in the house?

Do not get anything with Vista atm. Make sure you can downgrade to XP

    You use Internet Explorer?

Could be spyware/Adware that activates when you run IE.
Google for Hijack This/CCleaner/Adaware/SBS&D/Spywareblaster. Run updates on all the downloaded prodcuts, run a scan using all the antispyware apps.

If all else fails run Hijack this and post up the logfile (if the mods dont mind)
and I'll/We'll have a look at it.

As an aside if you fire up task manager and right click the process that runs on you poker client. Casino.exe for ipoker, not sure of star off the top of me head you can set the priority high which can get rid this sometimes.

However, it sounds to be like spyware so get scanning

I'd recommend getting firefox/mozilla (same thing, diff names) instead of IE.

Even if it's not the problem, it could save trouble in the future.

I installed a version of Firefox which had a memory leak in it a while back. Took quite a while for it to be noticable but after a while it was a real resource hog.

Later versions are working ok for me though.

It can't be. As per my OP, it happened on my old lap-top - got a brand new one and it happened again first time I went on-line while playing an MTT??

1st time online on a broadband connection without proper firewalls etc can feck up your system in minutes...

could also be stars software interferring with IE..they have some BHO's I think.
Try running firefox or opera as mentioned above.

Sounds to me like your router is acting up, next time your going out for any period of time (work or the like) turn it off and plug it out, then turn it back on when your back.

Sometimes people target people that are connected the whole time (same IP address) and flood them with DoS to mask some hacking attempt, by plugging out your router your guaranteeing that your going to get a new IP address

Oh yeah, if that doesn't fix it, ring your ISP and get a new 1

true. my computer was filled with a virus that i couldnt remove no matter how hard i tried. I had to reinstall.

As soon as i booted again while connected to the net the virus cam back almost instantly. Thankfully i reacted quick enough to unplug the net and reboot into safe mode before the virus could get dug in too deep and it was easy enough to remove then.
