    Hardly worth it.

    Its £70 up here

What size is the dish ?

Any possibility of buying the items seperately like during some of their previous offers ?
    Hardly worth it
With Maplin doing a 65 cm dish and basic FTA reciever for about the same price probably not (on the other hand Lidl do throw in an LNB)

Hi I was wondering if anyone could explain how you can access satellite tv using dishes like the ones sold in lidl from time to time.
Is it possible to set up a dish and box yourself and not have to pay money after? What channels can you recieve? What do you actually need? Satellite dish. (have an unused sky dish) Decoder box? Where can these be bought?

Any comments would be greatly recieved...

45CM? They were THIRTY FOUR last time!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,242 ✭✭✭Ulsterman 1690

45cm would be good enough for Astra 2 in England/Wales and (at a push) in parts of Ireland that werent too far West or North

35 cm is only fit for painting silver and sending to some village in Africa without electricity/gas so they can cook their dinner

Can a larger dish be used to replace the 45cm dish or are the connections different.

Yes a 60cm or larger can be substituted and will work fine

I have an unused sky dish at home could this be connected to the digi box lidl provide? And if so what channels could it recieve? Is it a worthwhile investment?

There is Astra 2A, 2B, 2C? Which one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,184 ✭✭✭✭L1011

    2A/2B/2D/Eurobird 1 are co-located at 28E, you'll get all of them. 2C is elsewhere.

Yes thats why its called "free to air" (see the various sticky threads for more info)
    What channels can you recieve?
On the Astra 2 satellite (the strongest signal in Ireland/UK and used by Sky etc) you can get all the BBC and ITV channels (but not Channels 4 or 5 or any of the Irish channels -not yet anyway) Film four and about 200 other channels (a lot of them are pure junk though teleshopping, religion although theres a few news and music channels) also a couple of hundred radio channels. With a slightly bigger dish you can get the Hotbird and Astra 1 satellites and the choice of TV and Radio channels runs into the thousands but most of them are in foreign languages
What do you actually need? Satellite dish. (have an unused sky dish) Decoder box? Where can these be bought?

Again see the many sticky threads
The Lidl package includes a (small) dish but if you already have a dish Id suggest forgetting about Lidl and buying from somewhere like Maplin.co.uk or Satellite.ie

And if you DON'T have a dish, forget about the Lidl pack. It's bad value. You'll end up paying more getting a separate dish.

See the ICDG in my sig for free channels details and lots of info by some of the regulars here.

Actually for an extra tenner (sterlng) Maplin are doing a 65cm dish LNB and reciever package for £80

I have this dish/reciever. It picks up Astra 2 (The one with BBC/ITV) Astra 1 and most of the transponders on Hotbird* no problem.

The dish needs to be mounted onto either a wall or a concrete slab (£2.50 from any builders yard) which involves a bit of drilling but even a complete DIY nob like me can manage it..........

    * Of course It cant pick up more than one satellite at the same time. You have to move the dish to change between satellites. If you are going to be using more than one satellite youll probably want to buy a motor as well but 95% of English language channels are on the Astra 2 group

Lads, I know you all know your stuff when it comes to satellite equipment but I have posted before on boards that I have a Maplin 35cm dish (suitcase system) which is picking up all the FTA crystal clear in Dublin including when it was overcast and raining.

So before you all rubbish it - at least accept that in the right location (certainly where I am) it is a perfectly good system with perfect reception.

Indeed its right but more than likely it won't. I had a 60cm dish and rain caused some problems so consider yourself just lucky.
Personally keep away from lidl esp camping stuff and just buy off a supplier as for a few extra bucks, you'll get proper long lasting equipment i.e. triax dish. Theres me looking in shed at cheap lnb and crumby 60cm dish that had to be replaced.

I see lots more questions coming as always when lidl offer comes out........

Only ever tried the dustbin lid on Hotbird and it was actually OK till it started to rain - even on the 29900 SR transponder that National Public Radio is on. Then it went to pieces - literally :D

I have the Lidl satellite system over a year now and have had no problems with it (touch wood) except when its really really bucketing down the picture pixelates and it blew off target once in a really bad wind. But otherwise I have crystal clear reception and get all the BBCs ITVs and the free movie channels. Suits me fine in my kitchen. The decoder box is about the size of a large paper back book doesnt take up any room. I am happy with mine.

Oi don't call it a dustbin lid anyway - it's much smaller than that :D

How do i get to this page? Thanks for the reply.

This Forum is really very helpful. Good job

Good for temporary locations and situations where a permanent dish is not allowed. I have tried it in the Dublin area. Here it picks up the Astra2/Eurobird satellites well most of the time. Does not work in heavy rain.

For permanent installations and where constant reception is required, go for a larger dish with a good wall mount.

A lot of the transponders drop off quite quickly (EXCEPT 2D) as you go north west or west from Dublin/Waterford coast.

You can just about get away with this from Waterford to Ballbriggan along the coast. Forget it in Galway.,., Almost the same money gets a better receiver and a 65 to 80cm dish. 3 years ago Lidl systems where value, they arn't any more. Same with the camera offer. Big name cameras same spec or better at similar price in high St, never mind online.

Look at the sticky of suppliers and shop around. Don't waste 100 Euro on impulse tomorrow.

The dish is too small for us in the West but the
Box itself is a nice little receiver....
I myself started out with a Lidl Comag sl55..
    Ho what fun we had:rolleyes:

I've bought better recievers for less.

Anyway now that it is out we can have a separate thread for all the problems!
