    Hi all,

Have a quick question and here seemed to be the most suitable, Mod please move if there is a more appropriate area.

We are currently using Eircom Broadband with two computers, the main being connected physcially and the laptop being the secondary computer, connected via wireless.

As I use MSN a lot on the laptop in order to chat to friends abroad(No sound, just text), I've been recieving a lot of flack for how it is slowing down the connection for the PC as well as the laptop.

I've googled MSN Messengers affect on bandwidth, but have come up with no solid answer bar MSN Bots having a large effect on bandwidth.

    So, my question is this:

Does MSN Messenger have a large impact on bandwidth?

    Thanks in advance,

    Brian

Messenger has a negligible effect on bandwidth. According to my firewall, my network connection has been live for the last hour and a half. Messenger has been running for pretty much that entire time, and has sent a massive 20Kb, and received around the same. No chat session is active, just Messenger's periodic status message swapping with the server.

No text messaging on any client is significant.

Download & run www.silentrunners.org and then google the things it finds.

You may have something else running!

Yeah i have noticed when gaming on a pc physicially connected to the router, and someone on a laptop using msn to recieve messages, i get huge ping spikes. But yet d/u meter shows no extra bandwidth being used. So im guessing it has something to do with packets.
