2 stroke running without spark.....

    A strange thing happened yesterday......
Mini moto scrambler in the back garden and the chain slipped off the sprocket. Without the chain, the engine started to run very high. Pressed the kill button on the handlebar to short out the spark but it didn't cut off. I turned off the petrol but engine kept running on the petrol in the carb. Grabbed a pliers and pulled the ht lead off the top of the spark plug but the bike kept running, very high. After about 30 seconds the fuel in the carb ran out and it stopped.
Never heard of this happening before. I assume somehow, due to the high temperature in the cylinder the petrol combusted automatically when it entered the chamber. Anyone ever come across this before?

Yes, I've heard of similar, but not for many years............old LC's could actually start in REVERSE. You'd get quite a shock if you put it into gear, let out the clutch.........and shot backwards

Was it running for long, idle (i.e. overheating)..........is it air cooled?

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Altogether it was running high for close to a minute until the petrol in the carb ran out, 30 seconds before I pulled the lead off the plug and then another 30 seconds until the carb emptied.
I was worried about it overheating. It's air cooled. It cooled down while I put the chain back on and adjusted the tension. It ran fine after that.

yeah that can happen, usually from a hot piece of carbon buildup on the piston causing pre-ignition
