internet security problem

hey, recently I was having a few problems with my internet speeds, didnt thik much of it until it started getting too slow for my patience to handle

so I just installed spybot and found I had 6 or 7 malicious programs, I know stupid of me not to have it in the first place but anyhow used the tool and the computer did speed up however it is still slower than it originally was not much though wouldnt mind but the computer is fairly new, just wondering the best way of getting rid of anything that still might be there?

when I ran the spy bot 2 other messages came up,

and the same thing again justinstead of anti virus there was firewall written,
when I checked mcafee and the windows firewall it was grand, so anyone have any ideas, I do remember about two weeks ago mcafee and windows firewallswiching off by themselves would that have anything to do with it?

oh yeh and another question does a fire wall come with eircom broadband and f so is there any point in having the windows one on aswell?

I realise this is a bit of a long threadstart, but as Im a technophobe all help is appreciated.

Eircom BB doesnt come with a firewall, and the windows firewall is pretty bad. Chances are you have malware on your pc so do this for me please

Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here:

Don't use the windows firewall. It's crap, imo.

I would advise installing ZoneAlarm or Comodo (both free). ZoneAlarm may be a little more user friendly

You should also install further Anti-Spyware programs. Windows Defender, AVG anti-spyware, Adaware and Spywareblaster (it's a passive program that prevents your computer from being infected) are all free and you should have them installed.

Added to the above you should consider switching browsers to FireFox (if you havent already) and installing some of the handy security extensions.

Finally, I would advise getting rid of McAfee and installing oneof the following: Anti-Vir; AVG; or Avast. Despite the fact that they are free, they are considered to be better than McAfee.

Thanks a lot for youre advice regarding antivirus, mcafee gone and avg installed. you dont happen to know if sophos is any good? we get it free from college so I was just wondering whether avg or sophos is better?

So you uninstalled McAfee and replaced it with AVG, did you have any problems getting rid of McAfee? I haven't heard much about Sophos tbh, AVG is a very good program so your better off using that.

I recommend using AVG Anti-Spyware also

Your pc doesn't seem to have anything wrong with it, McAfee could be the reason for it being slow.

There are a few things you should do though :

Your using an old version of Adobe Acrobat Reader, this can leave your pc open to vulnerabilities, you can update it here :

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

* Click Start > Control Panel.
* Click Add/Remove Programs.
* Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
* Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and install it to your computer.

no I didnt have any problems uninstalling mcafee just used the add/remove yoke, is that right? is there a better way by getting rid of everything, I always tend to find remnants of old programs on my pc that I uninstalled a while ago,

by the way I downloaded spyware blaster and adaware found 15 tracking cookies, right will do with the avg anti-spyware, updating java and adobe as I type, and hmm start up, using the msconfig yoke, I disabled most of the unnecesaries using a file search thing to tell me what everything did and whether i should disable them or not, things like msn, dell network assistant a load of crap to be honest and my computer sped up for a while but when I put on the avg, adaware,comodo,spybot and spyblaster it slowed a bit again, not too bad though,

sometimes programs like McAfee and Norton dont get uninstalled properly, and end up leaving lots of remains running on your pc. As long as you didnt get any error message then it was probably removed properly.

anyway it all looks good, you can get rid of spybot and adaware if you want, AVG anti-spyware + spywareblaster is more than enough to keep your pc safe. I also use SpywareGuard which is from the people who made SpywareBlaster. Good choice on comodo, i hear its a very good firewall.
