Just want to enquire about a piece of bog oak I have, which I would love to get a nice smooth rich finish on.

At present it is dry and grey in colour, so I am just wondering what products I need to obtain a good finish. I am assuming that it will need sanding until reasonably smooth...

    Anyone here know the process?

    Thanks in advance.......

I used beeswax on mine and it worked well.

bog oak can be a bit split and the cell can break down to give a honey combing effect - a wax will give a nice finish but if the surface is not 'smooth' the wax may get caught in the splits and defects - i have used an oil such as teak for a high shine/ danish for medium and parafin oil (medical) for a nice matt finish.
here is a bog oak bowl finished in parafin

hope the pic comes up !!

    good luck

Best method of obtaining a high degree of finish on bog oak, is a sanded polish. Star with 150 grit garnet paper, and work all the way up to 2000 to 4000 grit wet and dry paper, used for automotive finishing. This is a labour of love approach, but on the final sandings with the wet n dry, and some small amounts of soapy water if the bog oak is in half decent shape, you will end up with an excellent finish, second to none.

A light coat of danish oil, or beeswax will do the final finish, if you want to. Your bog oak finish will impress every one.......mine does;) ;)

Well you need to put the time in to get up to 9 billion grit!
