    Hi all,

I am currently in the market for a used five door saloon (hatchback). I want at least a 1.6 or 1.8l petrol engine. Looking for around the 2003 mark and a budget of €12k give or take a little

The two types I have come down to are the Mazda 6 H/B and the Opel Vectra H/B. I was just wondering does anyone here have any expierience of either of these cars and could anyone reccommend one over the other or point out any reasons why you would not go with one or the other.

    Thanks in Advance

Not too gone on either model you mention. I find the Mazda a bit plastic on the inside and the Vectra is just uninspiring.

Have you looked at a Skoda Octavia?

The Octavia is smaller than both of those though, being based on the Golf platform.

Also, if the Vectra is uninspiring - where does that leave the Octavia?

OP - I'd go with the Mazda6 out of those two

I would choose the Mazda 6. I was looking at one of these towards the end of last year. Best model to go for is the Sport Touring model which has climate control, cruise control, electric sunroof, sports suspension and alloy wheels as standard. The dash is a bit plasticy but once you get over that the Mazda 6 is a fine car. They are ultra reliable and are a very nice car to drive being based on the Ford Mondeo chassis. Exterior styling still looks good today imo despite being 5 years old.

I had a 1999 Vectra a good few years ago and had lots of trouble with it Ended up hating it but I have no first hand experience of the newer model so cannot comment on it.

Other similar cars you should look at are the Ford Mondeo, Nissan Primera and Toyota Avensis.

Avoid the 1.6 Vectra as it is very underpowered. I had a 03 vectra 1.8 and it was extremely hard on fuel (20mpg in town!!). It is a known issue with this engine thats why a new VVT 1.8 was brought in last year. Even though I have a Vectra if you can't stretch to a diesel one I'd pick the Mazda

I have had a Mazda 6 for a couple of years now. Least troublesome car I've ever had (i.e. zero problems). I'm probably biased but I'm actually a bit insulted that a Vectra can be mentioned in the same breath as a Mazda 6! Mondeo would be another fine choice in this price segment as would an Avensis.
