If one makes a call through VOIP to a landline, is it possible for the receiver of the call to trace the call? (if the caller has a caller ID, what number would show up??)

I know this is a weird question, but I really need to know. Hope someone can help me. :-)

usually an 076 number in Ireland anyway but this can be changed to any number by your VOIPSP if they are willing ;-)

The nubmer displayed can be controlled by the voip software used, my blueface account displays the 091 numbers assigned to me by blueface face, others (like eircom) display the 076 number they give to their customers.

But there is no hard and fast rule, it depends which voip service you are talking about....

As users can send "wrong" info to their service provider many of the knowledgeable ones will either restrict CLI to ensure they don't take bad info from the SIP messages or they'll put in the correct info based on the registered username / VoIp account. Some of the "younger" players out there who came from a VoIP background without knowledge of the PSTN switching background / regulatory requirements may be sending info forward but to get to the PSTN they have to break out somewhere and the majority of these larger organisations won't pass forward the user defined CLI was they don't trust its authenticity.
