Planning an interrailing trip at the moment
Flying into Rome and have to be in Vienna 8 days later
I was thinking about traveling up through Italy but then someone suggested that i get the ferry to croatia instead.

Having real trouble deciding what to do in Croatia, ive read the islands on the coasts are really nice but they dont seem to have any hostels on them (or none that i can find anyway) and as im gona be traveling alone and am on a tight budget Hotels arent an option

Had looked into getting the ferry to zadar and then staying on Pag island for 3 nites but i cant find anywhere to stay

Does anyone have any recommendations for Croatia? and how to go about it?

    Thanks

i went inter railing three years ago and stopped in Zagreb, Split and Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik's fantastic but might be a bit of a stretch to get there and back to Italy in a short space of time. My sister went to Hvar which is meant to be one of the best islands for partying and stuff and i think is easy to get the boat to from Italy. Hostelworld.com is the best place to look for hostels and i think there's one or two on Hvar. But mostly in Croatia you stay in guesthouses as soon as you step off the boat auld ones will be coming up showing you pictures of their houses most of them are decent and you should be able to haggle them down to about €10-€15 for the night. I heard all the islands are beautiful though. Try putting in Croatia to Hostelworld and im sure you'll find a few.

Hvar, Split and Dubrovnik are beautiful.
there will be NO problem getting a place to stay. when u get off a bus of boat U will be dragged off somewhere literally!
u can get an overnight train from split to zagreb and on up to vienna but only 8 days to do it isnt a lot of time really...

I stayed in Zagreb and Zadar last year and I don't remember anyone offering me accommodation.

A tip with regards to transport: The rail network is Croatia is very small. I know you have interrail tickets, but the bus will usually be quicker. I got the bus from Zagreb to Zadar for E15, and it was modern motorway for most of the journey. It put our motorways to shame, to be honest!

I also got the ferry from Zadar to Ancona (Italy) with Jadrolinija. It was cheap, and the ferry was very nice, but it was very long at six hours for a trip that's the same distance as Dublin to Holyhead.

With only 8 days between Rome and Vienna, I'd recommend staying in Italy and travelling up via Slovenia, stopping in Ljubljana along the way.

Croatia is definitely worth a visit. Dubrovnik is lovely, as are many of the islands. Kolocep has a lovely sandy beach (a rare thing in Croatia), mind you there isn't much else to do on the island :-)

Orebic and Korcula are both worth a visit too, they're separated by a boat ride of a few minutes.

I had the same experience when getting off a ferry or a bus, a lot of people out pimping their rooms, just be careful they're not too far out of the way. You will see plenty of signs for "Sobe" (room) about too, and a local tourist info office set me and my girlfriend up with a room at very short notice in Korcula.
