Problems with Mac Mail and ISPs/Mail Servers

    Hey,
I'm having a problem with setting up an e-mail account through mac mail. Now as far as I can see the problem isn't to do with mac mail, because I tried it on Thunderbird and had exactly the same problem.

I'm using BT Broadband and connecting to the internet via an AirPort express router (sharing a connection for and iMac and MacBook)... I'm new to mac.

So, the other day I went to set up the email account and entered in the pop settings like:

    mail1.eircom.net
    username (@eircom.net)
    password

But the end result was that I could connect to the incoming mail but not outgoing (using mail1.eircom.net form SMTP).

Last night I was trying to send an e-mail and neither incoming nor outgoing would work.

But this morning I discovered that I needed to set the outgoing mail to BT's settings (mail.iol.ie for SMTP). So great... this worked and now I can send mail but I'm still having no luck receiving it. :o

I ran the connection doctor and it says...

POP Account: Could not connect to this POP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences.

mail.iol.ie: Connection to server succeeded, no login required

When I just click Get Mail it says that the connection to the server timed out at Port 0 as well as the above line. So does anyone know what my problem is? Any help would be very much appreciated. I'm hoping its not a problem on my end, but could it be to to with the way I'm connected to the internet? I also never had any problems with email using Thunderbird on Windows. I connected over eircom servers for in and out despite using BT Broadband.

To send email you must use the SMTP server of your ISP, in your case this is BT. Go here to get the settingd that apply to you. I think it should be mail.iol.ie for the smpt server.

edit/ Sorry should have read the full post . . . check your mail settings and make sure you haven't set "Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL)" setting.

Are you absolutely sure that you can have entered the eircom details correctly?

Hey thanks for the replies... but it just seems to be working all of a sudden for some reason. I did't change anything. Thanks again.

The settings for BT are pop.iol.ie for incoming mail and mail.iol.ie for outgoing. The password is only for incoming so dont put any in for smtp.

Good point actually, I'd assumed he had an existing Eircom email account and wanted to send and retrieve mail from it, but of course if he has a BT account the above would be true as well.
