LOS ANGELES -- Jack Valenti, the former White House aide and film industry lobbyist who instituted the modern movie ratings system and guided Hollywood from the censorship era to the digital age, died Thursday. He was 85.

Many will morn him but even more will see his death as the end of a age of extremely bad decisions with regards to rating systems and content management (DMCA anyone?).

    Further reading on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Valenti
and one of his infamous quotes with regards to Betamax/VHS and the movie industry....
"I say to you that the VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston strangler is to the woman home alone."

Hopefully this will bring about some change in US ratings. The mpaa's rating system has to be one of the most nonsensical rating systems in the world.

NC-17: Nobody under 17 years of age allowed which means no large cinema chain will touch your film with a bargepoll and Blockbuster wont stock your movie:eek: Eh why?

R: Under 17 accompanied by an adult
PG-13: Under 13 accompanied by an adult
    then PG and G

So basically you have from R to PG basically meaning the same thing and NC-17 meaning your film is'nt worth the celluloid it's printed on.
