Yes both boxes need to be connected to your phoneline permanately so sky can check both boxes are in the one house its the conditions of multiroom at the reduced price and if you disconnect you will get letters threatening to charge you full price for the mirror sub.

On the sky website if i just click on an option (not multiroom) it wont let me proceed any further if i dont have a phone line anyway

imo its better to phone them up and order. if you dont get a phoneline you will most likely only be able to get a normal box from them by paying the once of fee of i think 40 euro no phoneline option doesnt apply to sky + hd or multiroom if you go to a indepent installer they may be able to sort you with sky +.

a workmate had said that he did that a few years ago, before sky +,

Do you know what the cheapest line rental package is around?

i dont know of many but magnet comes to mind. what i really meant is that you could pay fully for the sky+ box from an independent dealer as this is not subsidised sky will not enforce the phoneline on you. bare in mind full price is 300 euro excl installation.

Magnet don't do residental anymore (except a few estates where they have their own fiber installed). So you'll have to pay the standard eircom line rental. Some companies subsidise the rental if you take a call bundle out with them. You might also get away with Digiweb Metro (currently down!!). I've dialled up to eircom dialup, and sent/received a fax just dandy. Watty also claims to have used the Sky interactive feature, with a Metro phone line. Just research that more before committing to it.

Is that true? Twice Sky have told me (phone) that you need a phoneline for a Sky+ subscription regardless of whether you have your own Sky+ box or not. 1st guy sounded shaky, but the 2nd was very definite on it. Have you a source for this? Cheers.

You might have some chance of geeting away without a phone line for a single Sky + connection but definitely not for multiroom.

i just meant that if u pay the full retail price for the sky + box they wont enforce the phone line but thats not to say you wont get a letter reminding you to connect it. its usually subsidised discounted sky boxs that they bother you more about over the phoneline but as others have said you must have both boxes connected at all times to a working telephone line with multiroom.

Sky will not activate the card for a sky+ or Sky HD Subcription unless a callback has been registered first. On a rare occasion they will do it if you complain a callback to go through but this is not recommended as it leads to problems further down the line.

So simple rule is if you want SKY+,SKY HD, or multiroom you must have your equipment connected to the same phoneline at all times....but I think their should be an option for people to omit a line for a fixed price ...

Very hear-say-y guys! Do ye have any source or something closer to fact that you can get a Sky+ subscription without the requirement for a telephone line?

3rd agent yesterday went off to check (after I told her I had heard that if I got my own Sky+ box, that I could get the sub), and confirmed it wasn't possible. It's a 12 month minimum contract with the requirement for a phone line for the duration.

Now I'd well believe that all 3 agents were wrong, just is there anything more concrete to back this assertion up?

Offically you can't get Sky+ without a phone line.
Unoffically if you provide and install your Sky+ personally and only ask sky for a sub, you can get a card without a phone line. Or if you have Sky and upgrade yourself, they will often upgrade the card.

There is no offical mechanism to get a Sky Install of Sky+ without a phone line as there is with ordinary box (37.50 charge).

So the confusion arises from HOW you got the Sky+ box and how you get the viewing card.

Paying Sky a full price for the Sky+ won't help on its own.
