Did anyone see todays STAR newspaper, they're american writer (think its niall odowd) basically had a huge rant about how the new family guy is a disgrace and it portrays ireland as a pile of drunks. also how his irish father is a drunk and stupid and the intelligent one in the family speaks with an upperclass english acent.and is UNFUNNY!!someone obviously reading WAAAAY too much into things.obviously he dosnt realise that family pretty much has slagged off everybody at this stage and wouldnt be "anti-irish"

the clip his here, and i think its very good.

The Star are a few months late on this one. And all they have done is promoted it. Tools. Pretending like they actually give a ****.

Wow... must be a slow news day in the Star. :)
I just watched that clip (saw the original episode a few months ago), its its very very funny. Even the musical number is entertaining.

He needs to get a life.

Did that guy not realise that taking the piss and taking a stereotype waaaay to far is what Family Guy does? He's obviously never watched the show, or if he did then he wasn't paying much attention.

I can't really remember the episode now, it's been so long since I watched it. From what I remember it was all fiddles and begorrah and drinking. What other kind of Ireland would a show like FG portray? Skangers on the streets of Dublin mugging everyone that walks by, stabbings in Limerick, Nigerians putting skimmers in Pass machines? Wouldn't be nearly as funny.

Anyone remember the episode of the Simpsons where Bart gets drunk on St. Patricks day and the British Fish and Chip shop gets blown up and the crowd yell "Yay"?

Did the Star ever complain about that one? I thought it was hilarious.

I was more offended by them showing a black cab in Ireland...
If you're gonna use racial stereotypes, at least get the country right:p

I was cringing at the idea of this, pretty glad the trip to Ireland section lasted all of 5 minutes. Obviously they had to show a satirical version of "Ireland" that a largely American audience who've mostly never been over here would get, so it ended up being one straight out of a 1950s movie and playing on the most obvious drinking culture stereotype (which, in fairness, we can't say is exactly untrue).. Most of the accents were way off, sounded more Scottish than Irish. Thought the slurred conversation between Peter and his Irish father ("Why aren't you good looking like most Americans?") was the high-point.. Really, the whole thing was less offensive than most of the humour they have in there and The Star is just groping for any kind of controversy that they think might sell papers.

I found it more offensive that they didn't do anything with the stereotype - put a spin on it or some such. It made a stereotype boring and that's more offensive! Much better is when they had us discover alcohol millennia ago and bring the downfall of our advanced civilization or the automatons in the museum...

Still think "South Park" has the lead on delivering offence. "The Star" should never watch it. The fact the show gets away with showing Jesus and Bush defecating on an American flag will always demand the utmost respect.

Did anybody catch Sean O Rourke's uncontrolled laughter on Radio 1 yesterday? The played a clip from the show, and he could hardly stop laughing, and this was during an interview with that journalist who had taken offense. I don't think he was impressed, the interview might have been cut a bit short, it didn't last very long.

UK showings always had that cut. RTÉ never cut it anytime I have seen it. In fact they rarely cut anything from what I can see. They showed topless ladies on a beach in Police Academy a few weeks back. Showed it at 6.30.

That one was funnier, but note the Scottish\Irish accent confusion again!

I see this is back in the papers again today.

I think the Scottish\Irish accent and the black cab were just thrown in for fun not by mistake. But the rest of it reminds me of Ireland in the 80's, so they pretty much got it right ! haha very funny episode :p

i saw that episode a couple of months ago and thats just what family guy, southpark and the simpsons [to a lesser extent] do and it was hilarious:D like most of the episodes of those three shows:) , you can't get carried away in the politics of the programs you just have to sit back and laugh:D :D:D

my main complaint of the family guy episode is that its stereotyping is as ixoy puts it very boring.

    its nothing clever or new.

I mean their earlier one is much funnier because it takes obvious stereotypes (drinking) does something great with it, and then sprinkles in less known or more risky stereotypes (the role of the wife/religion etc)

Even Francis, peters *dad* for the previous 3 seasons was the best pisstake of Ireland in family guy.

This one is just plain lazy, it doesnt have the same attention to detail and it went for a cheap laugh.

One of the Things we do good as Irish is laugh at ourselves....
That's why you don't see people burning flags in the street...
So we get drunk, If more races had a sense of humour about themselves there would be a WHOLE lot less tension around.

RTE always try there best to show things uncensored so you dont watch enough simpsons on RTE!!

I like that about Irish tv actually they treat the viewer with some bit of common sense and dont blur/beep out everything that might offend 0.0001% of the population. In fact a couple of months ago they had some policy released on this area and they said that they will never consider beeping things out, they will show it at an appropriate time uncensored.
