To get off work a little early, any ideas ? I was going to say that I needed to go to the bank in town by 5 but then I realised that the banks close at 4. I only need 30 mins or even less off, ideas ?

How the hell did my post go above yours when I posted after you

What are they like to get time off? Could you say it was for personal reasons?

"i need to go to the bank"

Its Friday, so your excuse will have to be better than usual, and it can't be something that you should have mentioned in the past, such as "Oh, I suddenly forgot I've a dentists appointment at 4:30 this afternoon".

Something along the lines of "Listen, I just got a text that my mothers had a heart attack, gotta go, good luck" would suffice.

Tell them you have explosive diarrhea. No-one will want you around then.

Even better just say I have an appointment today @ whatever time and ask if you can leave a bit early. They'd wanna be complete nazi's to make an issue out of it. If they do, tell them it's a job interview.

    Are you magic ?

It cant be something that I should have mentioned before i.e Dentist, Doctor etc. Also, Im not going to make a big thing of it i.e hear attack.

I only need 30 mins or so off...I like the appointment one but they would most likely ask me its for.

You and your wife/girlfriend are going to a counsellor.
You have to collect your dog/cat/budgie/wife from the vet before it closes.
You have to bring your car in to get serviced before its NCT.
You have to get to the bank before the weekend.
You have to go donate blood!
You have to go get an STI test.

Hmm - tis a little too serious. What about ' I have to meet my brother in town to give him his passport, hes going to London and left it in my house' or something along those lines.

    Yeah that sounds plausible.

    Yes. Yes I am.

I doubt they would ask when you don't specify what it is. They'll think it;s personal. If they do say it's one of the other mentioned. Even you've to call into someone in Financial services.

If I were only asking for 30mins off I'd ask on the day rather than in advance. You'll be sound. Tell them you'll work it up (next week).

Why do you need it off :) (Only joking).

You need to collect something off somebody, who's going away for a couple of weeks at 4:30 :)... or something

Generally, as long as there's a deadline somewhere out of your control (i.e. train, somebody going away, shops closing) then you're fine... just need to be a little creative.

Or I could say 'need to get my bank card off a friend, this is my only chance to do it until Monday'

If I tell you why I need it off you will laugh at me.

Doctor can be a last minute thing - something "personal" came up last night and this is the only time you can go...

Tell them you want to go on the beer early.

Just say I want to leave 30mins early. If they ask why tell them. Why can't people be honest anymore?

Your psychic friend (daveg) has predicted your untimely death if you don't leave asap!!!

Is it an STI test? That would explain why you don't want to use that excuse ;)

Say you need to collect your car from the garage, only works if you don't have your car parked outside the office though.

Don't go to lunch, say you don't feel too well. Then, in the afternoon go to the toilet for about half an hour. When you get back and people wonder where you've been, say you really don't feel well and they'll send you home.

Tell them you need an hour off for personal reasons - however you should have told them yesterday and come in an hour early/worked your lunch.

Get a friend to call reception at 4.15, take the call and look concerned and say you really have to go, problem at home.. Nobody will be nosey enough to ask what it is..

60% of the time, it works everytime (tadaa!)

since when do you need a reason to leave early???

Just say you need to leave early, and leave (and make up the time next week (or whatever procedure is in place, obviously). You should not really have to justify yourself...

how about your going down the country for the weekend for a wedding or something and your friend rang you on your lunch break saying that the train you had intended to get was booked out so you need to leave a little early to catch an earlier train because theres no more direct ones after that?

The unaswered question of why you need to leave, and why that isn't a solution to why you can get off, has left a hole in my curiosity that must be filled.

    We insist.

Be vague, just like you would in real life.
Start heading out and say "Have a good weekend", if they say something just say you have to pick up a friend at the station. If you elaborate it'll sound made up, no?
