Yeah its a little expensive, but depends on what accomodation you're willing to put up with. There is a great metro network, so if you stay a bit further out of the city centre, then you could probably pick up a nice hotel reasonably enough.

You can get food very very cheap if you'd go to the local places with non-english menus! Definately worth a visit for 3/4 days. There is a pretty cool theme park - Ocean World or something like that, and really good shopping :)

Why would you go to Hong Kong and go to a theme park called ocean world. If you are looking for that go to spain or disney land.
Havent been to HK myself but would love to visit it sometime in the future.
I hear the food is great.

That's a bit harsh on the guy. If he got up of his arse and went there what does it matter what he chose to do?

If you haven't been there, why jump in with a comment like that?

Ocean park. Not that great tbh but the views there are amazing. Get the bus up to the peak for the scariest experience of a lifetime (esp if you hate heights like me).

Fair enough. Was a bit too harsh.

I just cant understand why people (glowing isnt one of them) go to visit countries and then stay in their hotel all during their stay or go to macdonalds or theme parks. Get out and see the real side of where you are visiting and get into the culture.

I now realise glowing isnt one of those people (sorry glowing!) having just spent the last hour reading her webpage about her travels around asia. Fascinating stuff. Great pictures and lots of funny stories. Sounds like it was fun glowing.

Hong Kong has to be one of my favourite cities in the wirld - and it doesn't need to be expensive. Here's just a few tips from someone who has spent some time there.

Stay in the YMCA on Kowloon if you can get a room. It's only a minute from the Star Ferry to Hong Kong Island and probably the best value place you can stay. And it's not all Christian and real YMCA'ish, it's a normal hotel with great rates. Go to peak point both day and night. The views, especially at night, are amazing. And late at night, just before it closes, is the best time as it's almost deserted and the atmosphere is amazing. Do it and you'll know what I mean. Have a drink in the Peninsula hotel - beautiful hotel and just a lovely thing to do. Head to the beach at Stanley, if only to look at the sign which lists all the things you're not allowed to do.

    Great city, have a ball.

Man1, thanks for retracting that! Yep i've done plenty of travelling and spent a bit of time in HK (doing LOTS of things :)) Ocean world just stood out because of the fantastic views from the cable car which goes over a huge peak in the middle of the park.

    Hi Glowing.
Sorry again for jumping to conclusions and being so prejudiced.
Have been reading over your travel diary again this morning, Id say you are itching to get out on the road again.
    Great photos too.
BTW if you had to choose to live between melbourne and brisbane which would you go for??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,851 ✭✭✭Glowing

I really liked Melbourne- it had a nice vibe. Very relaxed studenty feel to it, and some beautiful green areas along the river. I didn't spend a night there so I can't comment on the night life, but from what I've heard, its a great place to live. I was sorry we didn't get to spend more time there.

Brisbane was nice too but nothing really made it stand apart. The climate there would be quite a bit better than Melbourne which has very chilly winters!

We ARE going back on the road by the way (feet very very itchy!). I have to attend a wedding in November in Sydney, then we're off to South America for 2-3 months :D Are you thinking of moving to Oz?

P.S Sorry for hijacking the thread!

Yeah probably to melbourne but we are also considering brisbane, lots of people reckon its too hot to live though. We are moving out in a year id say.

check here for flights to HK, only from LGW. I'm told they're very good for prices - an airline with only 2 planes.

i second the above post. definitely one of the (if not the) best cities in the world. the skyline is amazing. the view from the peak is just unreal.
i stayed in the infamous Chungking mansions on nathan road i think. Wouldnt really reccomend it but it did the trick, is in a good location and was fairly cheap - 150HK$ p/night.
apart from the peak of the mountain on HK island, the best thing i did was take the ferry out to lantau island. This island is just a half hour away from downtown HK and is really sparsely populated with a number of small fishing villages and beautiful hill walks and beaches. so if you want to get away from the city for awhile its perfect.
Check out the nightlife in soho on HK island, where you can also check out the longest escalator in the world...there's a few parks around HK which are worth visiting. but most of all i'd say get out and walk around. HK island is unbelieveably small for a city like HK (just look at the skyline) and can be strolled around in a few hours...
also if you're into asian/ HK cinema at all check out the HK avenue of the stars (just like the Hollywood walk of fame), with Jet Li, jackie chan, sammo hung, Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung & directors like John Woo, wong kar wai, etc...
    anyway enjoy

    fly with oasis www.oasishongkong.com

i wouldnt really recommend coming until around october in order to avoid the humidity and pollution, but if you need any tips PM me - i have lived here on and off for 14 years, may be able to provide you with some idea of what to do that doesnt involve a trip to the overhyped stanley market.

and by the way, it's called ocean PARK ;) - soon to be home to two new pandas as a present from china to mark the ten years since the handover. that's another thing - flight prices will skyrocket during golden week and the handover anniversary - be smart when booking cos you will end up paying more. that said, you could always try and be here for the handover anniversary/tiananmen remembrance etc.

anyway like i said, if you want more info, PM me.
