    hey..

im having a bit of trouble viewing video files on my playstation 3..im using dvd-r's as data discs with the content on them..and as far as im aware i think they are .avi files and in properties they say compressed xvid..now i seen my ps3 can play mpeg video formats..but when anything else is presented.. it just says unsupported data and wont play..

anyone know how i can fix this?

would installing other os such as that linux one fix it?

Yeah it doesn't support avi files......convert them to mpeg?

You could try installing linux, then running VLC on that or something (Should work! :D)

yeah im converting one of the avi files to various formats as we speak..such as wmv, mpeg 2 and mpeg 1..and then ill burn onto disc and see which ones play..

ye i tought bout installing linux but seems now it would be a lot of hassle just to view some vids :D

hopefully mpeg 1 plays as it isnt to bigger in size as the original avi were as mpeg 2 was like seven times the size as the original..i still gotta wait for wmv to convert..ill jus gotta see how it goes..stupid not supporting .avi its most common id say :(

edit: ah well..mpeg 1 was the only one that worked and there were few probs with quality and res..ill just leave it..i dont think its worth the time and trouble :)

    thanks for tha help

For PS3 video you need to convert files to H.264, Main type (not Baseline). H.264 is MPEG4. The type to use is 4 or 4.1. I use 4.1 . The new PSP update also plays H.264 format files which is the "new" DivX/Xvid format for the net. Quicktime also uses this format, but is slower to convert by a long way.

The free programs PS3 Video 9 and SUPER do it. I use SUPER as I found it more reliable, and batch converts everything from VOB to WMV.

PS3 will play MPEG1 and 2 apparently, I haven't tried either. However, it will play unprotected VOBs (e.g., if you make holiday videos that are not encrypted on a DVD) if the extension is changed from .vob to MPG *I think* - I read that bit on a forum, so haven't tried it. Makes sense as it's just "raw" MPEG2.

You'll need to convert them to mpeg4 .
Pretty much all of the video convertors out there are fronts to ffmpeg so just get that, the following is the command I use.
    ffmpeg -y -i "$1" -f mp4 -title "$1" -vcodec h264 -level 30 -r 24000/1001 -b 1024k -bt 1024k -bufsize 10000k -maxrate 10000k -g 300 -coder 0 -acodec aac -ac 2 -ab 128k "$2-ps3.mp4"

where $1 and $2 are parameters, in window they would be %1 and %2

    http://www.redkawa.com/videoconverters/ps3video9/

This will convert them for you , it takes a while to do about 30mins for a 30min show etc ...

if you have a usb device ( hard drive , mp3 player ) you can put them on that and plug that into the ps3 you can then either play them directly from the mp3 player or copy them to the PS3 , it will save you a load of CD's .

I have a 250gb usb hard drive plugged into my ps3 and can watch all my shows direct from that

yeah that sounds good..i was actually thinking of buying a 1-2gb usb flash drive but then tought from what ya said of my mp3 which holds 5gb..i think ive given up on the idea of converting every thing to mpeg now think it just takes to long to convert everything..wish the ps3 played .avi ..

im now thinking of getting my old pc to work with tv and transport vids using mp3 as removable disk..or else getting a new cheap pc..

thanks for all the help lads

Thinking of getting a PS3 so to be sure, is there something odd about the PS 3's BR DVD player. If I rip a DVD and burn it to DVD+R(Audio\Video_TS folders and Mpeg/Vob files) will this play just like a normal DVD on the PS3. What's the story with converting to H264 format, is this so you can play it from the PS3's hard drive or is it just to save space.

H264 is like a more efficient DivX/Xvid. Yes, basically it saves space as you could reencode your DVDs to this and they could take up 500MB, or 100MB or 4GB depending on what level of video and audio quality you want.
