Hope someone can help me! When I access My Computer and select either my c drive or f drive , the windows open but then immediately close back to desktop. The files are still there ( I can see them using command prompt), and once or twice I've been lucky to get the window to stay open....

    Any advice? Thanks.

ps I have AVG antivirus and Spybot and neither have found any virus.

I know that you will think I'm mixing up Internet Explorer & Windows Explorer? but I'm not.

    Delete you temporary Internet files.

There is without any doubt an infection or trace of an infection on your system.

Just because you scanned & even removed some baddies doesn't mean that the damage they done is also removed, especially if they altered some DLL's.

One option you should try (It won't do any harm either way) is to run the system file checker command(SFC) from the run command.

It will check all the system files which are necessary to run your system & if it finds any that have been corrupted or altered in any way it will replace them from the operating CD. (You will need your windows CD to run this)

Here's what you need to do:

Make sure you are logged on as Administrator.

Insert your Windows CD into your CD drive. (Get hold of one if you don't have it)

    Click on START then RUN.

    Type in:

sfc /scannow (Note: that there is a space between SFC & /SCANNOW)

    Click OK

This process will take a bit of time & at different stages it may prompt you to click on OK or CONTINUE, so keep an eye on it.

    Good Luck!

    Hi
Thanks but the problem was Windows Explorer previewing divx files in any folder - and if one was corrupt it caused explorer to crash.

The problem was fixed by removing movie preview in XP Explorer by running

    regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

Now no preview so no problem..!

Yup! I remember I had this issue with my videos folder before. I had loads of small clips(200+) in a folder. I tried to remove the corrupt videos but that didn't help. Wish I new that little command back then!

    Qualtiy post! :)

Yes, now you mention it, I once had exactly the same problem. Took me hours of Googling to find the answer, but it was the same one.
