    * Email Access - Webmail, POP3 or IMAP
    * 2 GB diskspace with FTP access

takes a couple of days - think they handcheck all the domain names to ensure you're not getting www.digiwebsuckknob.com or something like that.

According to the whois records on these domains, DigiWeb owns them completely.

Yep. I'm not really bothered. I'm going to be using it just to play around with over the next year.

The problem is that you are now stuck with DigiWeb. You cannot transfer your domain over to another registrar or change settings - such as NS servers. They own the domain (in the eyes of ICANN).

On the domain ownership - digiweb may own them, but when do they expire?

One year from when they were created.

    It's a good business plan:
    * Get you invested in your domain over the first year, so you never want to abandon it.
    * Charge huge markups to keep your domain renewed.

You have to use their hosting service, as they control the NS server entries and they own the domain, so you can never move to a cheaper registrar.

    Overall, you're at their mercy.

Thats amazingly alarmist, you have no idea what the hell the intend on doing with the domains, they may very well just let you have them after a year as odds are they arn't worth crap.

They won't let you "have them" because you must pay the renewal fee or ICANN with delete the name completely. ICANN must get the money from somebody and I doubt DigiWeb are going to cough up.

Alarmist? This coming from a guy called Nietzschean.

as the domain and hosting package are worth around 50 euro, it's not going to break the bank to renew after the 1 year.

No big conspiracy here, just a good deal :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 79 ✭✭Newb

Yeah, you are probably right. There is no way of telling at the moment whether it is a deal or not. I just don't like them having their name on the domain name lease.

    <Digiweb Hat>

Mostly wrong, I'm afraid. We do have our information on the domain, but that's mainly because most people don't want theirs on there (bar the email) and it was _easier_ to do it this way.

As I've said in a few different places, after the year is up, you can renew it with us, or contact us and we'll update the contact information and give you the EPP code so you can renew it elsewhere. And even if you do renew it with us, if you check our domain prices, they definately do not have huge markups in them. Go on - check :)

Nice image though. Also, I never thought I'd need to defend the concept of 'free' and 'no catches'.

Seems like too much fuss to leave once you have joined. Well, thanks for the reply anyway.

Not really - if we set personalised info from day one, we'd just be a place giving away free domain names. Sign up, transfer away - no thanks :)

I can see your point of view, but can you see mine. Anyway, I give up, you win.
I understand, you are a business that needs to make money.

I have exams coming up and assignments to be handed in, so I give up.

    Thanks Regi.
