Thinking of knuckling down at the golf and upgrading the clubs after 8 years playing 3 times a year with a beginner set. Saw the Wilson Fat Shaft Platinum irons in Elvery's for 249, down from 699. Although i'm taking the 699 price with a pinch of salt, the reviews on the web seem very positive, although they're all about 5 years old. So, in short has anyone played with these? Good for a high 90s player? I'm hoping to start playing a lot this summer, and hoping to improve...

I used to have a set of Fat Shaft RM about 5 years ago, smaller head than the oversize version. I was playing off 5 or 6 at the time and i really liked them, good solid iron. wouldn't swap them for my Titleist blades now though :p
But in summary, go for it, thats a good price.

they are a good beginner set. i know the ones, fat shaft will make no difference as far as i know i think they just give a softer feel even if u cut it etc. They were a short lived thing since they began to get the same kind of feel from the original shafts.

Though there are Ben Hogan irons around these days around the same price , there based on callaways x-14's very very nice iron. Maybe a little harder to get used to then the wilson but worth a look

"Upgraded" to them 2 years ago.
Had played off handicap of 12 for 6 or 7 years. They have helped me get my handicap back out to 14 for the first time in 17 years.
I set a personal low four weeks ago with a score of 14 stableford points (yes 18 holes played) - so have 15 well in my sight before the summer. Doubt if I had even broken below the 20 points barrier before, including my beginner days 20 years ago.

Just one guys experience for what its worth.

Before you spend money on a set make sure they match the clubs to you physically - make sure the clubs fit you in terms of the lie of the head i.e. if you're 6 ft 5 and the clubs are standard the lie won't be correct. Then make sure the shafts meet your swing speed. In fact go to Premier golf beside the red cow - go on their swing analyser and see what they recommend - their prices will probably mean you'll walk out with a set of clubs but at least ou know they are matched to your height, swing speed etc. They won't guarantee par rounds but they'll give you a better chance than buying something that doesn't suit. ;)
