Ok ive got serious GAS. Im not sure how much longer I can last......Must buy guitar. Ive got the disease. Its a serious problem!:D I have a mexican strat and am thinking of buying another guitar soon. Im thinking one that can play heavier type music than that. Its got vintage style lace sensor pickups so I have to fight it at times for heavier stuff. Any recommendations? Im thinking of an SG at the moment.

    What's your budget?

If you're not put off by the 'vintage' look and feel, you can't beat a classic Flying V for those heavy monster riffs - and they are usually reasonably priced compared to an SG or LP.

About a grand. I could spend more if I really fancy the guitar. Not a big fan of the flying v. I would get one for a laugh but not for my main axe.

looks good but id prefer something I could try out before buying and I wouldnt know a lot about that one.

I'll second that. The Patrick Eggle Berlin is a fabulous guitar (I have one ;)). That one is a real beauty but they can be gotten for cheaper. That is also a 2000 model and is no longer afiliated with Patrick Eggle himself as he sold the company.

This one is an original and a better guitar too.

Was that the one from Hungary? If so that wasn't sold as it didn't meet the reserve. It was missing the back cover and had a locking trem that could no longer be locked because of the missing cover. Apparently the covers are very hard to come by too.

man that one looks sexy!! But what do they sound like. Does it really sound like a les paul or a strat? Or both at the same time lol. I always wanted a guitar with Gibson written on it though...I know..I know:o Seriously considering that second one from 92.

P.S. Im not looking for toooo heavy. As in rip your face off metal chuggggg!

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

It doesn't have to be heavy

Neo. Since I started playing guitar I have always always wanted to have a Gibson Les Paul! In November last year I bought a Les Paul Standard Faded tabacco burst. In March this year I sold it! I absolutly hated it. It did sound good but felt rotten and was difficult to play. The frets were horrible vintage type and the general finish was quite bad. The body was 2 piece aswell

For a guitar that cost me €1700 (€2500 in Ireland) it was a complete ripoff. Now I am not knocking all Gibsons but there is much better to be had for the money you will pay for a basic Les Paul and especially a high end Les Paul.

The Eggle can do a lot of styles. I upgraded one of my pickups to a BareKnuckle and it is just sweet. They are usually coil tapped too so you can have single coil type sounds as well as humbuckers(LP and Strat). They are really very versitile.

    Some wise words there.

Also, check the u-box for some Bacchus guitars. I've never played one, but I have two of their basses and they are the best basses I've ever played (and I've played a lot), so my instincts tell me they'll be pretty damn good. Eggle or Bacchus, Bacchus or Eggle. Make it so!

Speaking of Bacchus...... this one is giving me serious GAS. I mean ****ing serious GAS. It's real risky though to push the button... on the home front that is.

Ohh nice. Well as the saying goes, it's better to apologise for something you did than... well I forget how it goes but that's a damn nice guitar :)

Not bad not bad indeed. yeah Gibsons are a rip off alright. And at the end of the day its all about sound isnt it. I think ill go into the shops at weekend and try a few. If one feels right ill get it. Otherwise I might get that eggle listed above there.

There are a couple of Bacchus Duke models in the U-Box. I'd appreciate if someone bought them before I'm obliged to pounce. :)

Has anyone used the Ibanez Jem 7V?

I've never played it, but seeing as it's Vai's it couldn't be bad, but I never hear of people using them...

They are very nice but horrendously over priced. You can get yourself a nice Ibanez J-custom for less and its a better guitar.

there is alot to be said for gibson quality control. the key is to try as many as possible and then pick one that feels right. i tried a load out in work and when i finall got the right one it rocked! cant beat it! its amazin though that somethin so expensive can easily have flaws(and they dont care that it does). its stupid but if ya get a nice one you cant beat em....this is all just my opinion of course;)

its alot of money though and if your not set on a lp id go with a sg. standards are fairly cheap atm. only 1399 in town compared to 1599 on musicstore and what not! just make sure u try everythin in town! go to all the shops sto get a good selection too!

I had one up to recently. It's a good guitar if you're into that sort of thing.

Build quality & fretting wasn't up to J-Custom levels.

    Sudden bout of GAS.

Damn, I've never seen a guitar like that - I love it!

Edit: Don't click on that link. That mofo has some collection of nice guitars, you'll go nuts.....a Japanese zebra-wood Strat too. :(

Depends on your style and taste........guitar with humbuckers is the first thing to look out for.....maybe that was obvious, but we have to start somewhere.

Next is the make or brand......and just as important is the country of manufacture. USA, Japan, Korea etc.
For €1000 i would not waste it on a Korean guitar.....you could do much better.......as in USA or Japanese model. These are the top 2 by a mile.

Don't believe a salesman who says Korean guitars are the same as Japanese because they are Asian. Cheap salesman tactic. All Japanese guitars are top quality.....Ibanez etc. Guitars made in Korea are far lower quality....don't get me wrong, some are decent and will do the job for gigging, but a grand....stay clear.

Brands in your price region are excelent......Gibson, Ibanez are my 2.
I own a Gibson Les Paul Standard.....far from perfect.....heavey, high fret acess(22 frets) not easy because of shape (even Slash himself has difficulty) and no tremelo system. The Standard model is out of your price range, but the Gibson Les Paul Studio is about $800 to €1000 second hand.

Also a Gibson SG (ACDC) second hand for the same price.....tone,quality and looks mean this is a gem.

I also own an Ibanez Gem Steve Vai model in white......possibly the best guitar on the planet....although Paul Reed Smith could claim that one.
Again this is well out of your price range €2700 new, although i got mine second hand perfect for €1500. Watch out for the Ibanez RG Jap models.....as good as it gets.

Other options would be another Fender Fat Strat.....that is Fat means it has a humbucker and 2 single coils.....second hand for about €800.

The choice is always yours, but my number 1 advice is to go for USA or Japanese made guitars.
    :):):):):):)

I'd like to address a few points above.

Korean guitars are as good as their maker. A Korean Schecter is an incredible instrument for the price, as good as most Japanese Ibanez in my experience. Do not just write off guitars that come from Korea without knowing what you're dealing with. (Not a dig at the poster above, just some good buying advice).

USA-built guitars are seriously over-priced, to the extent that there's almost no point buying one. Really, you get far more guitar for your money from say Japan. I own a Gibson Les Paul Standard, and I bought it because I pretty much fell in love with it. It's an incredible guitar and I don't regret it, but for the same money I could have bought better guitars, I am quite certain. My Schecter is about the same quality and I paid a grand less for it. If you're smart, you can get exceptional guitars for bland money.

The things you list about the Les Paul, they aren't flaws. Plenty of guitarists out there who don't want trems, or who don't find the upper-fret access hard on a Les Paul, myself included, and the weight is subjective, some like it and some don't. I personally find it very reassuring to have it that heavy. So again, wouldn't call these things faults, just things about the guitar on which you'll have to base your own decision.

The prices you're quoting are off-putting as well. They really aren't accurate representations. I can't imagine ever shelling out 800 blips for a second-hand fat strat for instance, you could pick one up for less if you tried, or for second hand SG's, you certainly wouldn't want to pay too much either, as they go new for about a grand, under it a lot of the time.

You quote a lot of big names there, Ibanez, PRS and Gibson, and Fender got a reference, but there are fantastic builders out there making guitars just as well for none of the financial ruin. Don't confine yourself to this little segment of the guitar market, but open yourself to better guitars at better prices, and perhaps the OP would be better advised not to buy those guitars at those prices either, because I certainly wouldn't.

Wow, long-winded post from me. Just felt those things had to be addressed anyway, for the sake of your own better information.
